Their suppose to keep their shape longer.

Pre worn perma shapes are supposed to stop / help you to not put lines in your work from your trowel edge.
Then again if you're any good, you won't do this in the first place.
I've got one waiting in the garage ready for when my ordinary mt gives up the ghost.

Try a pre-worn permashape.....you won't want to use anything else ;) £40 ish well spent!!! 8)

magnets in basingstoke are doing 13" stainless m/t for £25 + vat at the mo. picked up one today to start breakin in tomorrow

I have a 14" gold trowel its costs a bit more than a permashape but its lasted over 3 years, it doesnt mark as easy if it gets knocked and they dont erode any where near as much only down side is its a takes a bit more work to break in. In other words a rekon its the muts nuts.

why break in why not just use it straight away i always do does anyone else ?

not if i can help it. i had to with my first trowel but with the one im using at the minute i would use it so lay on with then use it to polish to try and get the blade good. ive also used a diamond stone to help it. i think the blades are s**t when you first get them

Like grand said use it straight away, i only had to as i had a trowel for 7-8 years didnt bother breaking in a new one and it broke and had to start from scratch i have 3 on the go at the moment never gonna put myself in that situation again funny thing was i knew i had to break in another trowel at the time just got used to using the one i was using.

Bought one today funnily enough at North Weald market as i left most of my tools in Spain as i need them there so am slowly building a new kit here, 16" 5" stainless steel, gold, broken in, permashape £35 cheap enough i thought.

Permashapes are guaranteed not to go the wrong way under normal use. SOmething to do with the memory of the steel but if you want to know more talk to a scientist

oth tyzack and MT broken in trowels have had the edge of the trowel ground down and when you 1st start skimming with them you can see the lines on the finish. Mind you they don't take long to remove with an oil stone and then they are ready to go.
