A builder who I do skimming for now and then had a double bedroom sized ceailing for me to skim, its a suspended one thats just been framed and boarded about a foot below the original.


Not a problem for me, charged him £100 and done it yesterday after work.


There was a loft door sized gap cut out on one side, obviously I treated it as being a loft acess so just skimmed into it.


Got a phone call this morning asking why there's a hole in the ceiling!! I thought it was a wind up but it was not.

Apparently the wankoor sparks cut it out to pull there cables through the old ceiling and never put the cut back in, no surprise there.


So all that has been sorted the board is back in and he wants me to patch it in, not a problem for me, dont really like patching but there we go.


I said chuck me £50 and ill pop up and patch it tomorrow evening.


Guess what answer I got? "you can patch it whenever but you ain't getting paid for it, you should of rang me when you seen the hole"

I told him take £100 out of the sparks money and we will have £50 each, fairs fair.


But no, this whole situation that isn't my fault is on my back, dont really want to fall out with him as he owes me money for the ceiling and does give me some good little jobs. I've tryed calling him back but he's not.answering to me atm.


Soo who's to blame?
 
Well really if the sparks unscrew something they should screw it back again ..... Also abit mis communication . Tell the builder he said to you it was ready to skim so you skimmed it ! **** that for a giraffe lol i probably would of rang him though if the hole looked odd ......
 
Wasn't oddly sized, literally looked like a loft acess shape, sort of 1 foot by a foot and a half.

I said I'm.only paid from the waste down, he got a bit.cranky with that haha!
 
The sparks and the builder fault..just go back n patch it in, for all it is.goodwill an all that.......or fucck him and you wont be doin anything for him again?....up to you....

Why would there be a loft hatch access into a suspended lid with only a foot of space?:rolleyes)
 
Yeah I was gonna just patch it over and get it off my back.

I thought they might of been cutting into the original ceiling to form a new one, sounds a bit silly now he's pulled me on.it, but it sorta made sence to me at the time

Nothing mate, they cut it inside of.the metal frame. There was nothing suggesting it was going to be covered back up

So the sparks litrally cut a square out that was all neat right to the edge of the joists so you could not see them ? Seems abit strange ? Surely just cut 2 lines and then unscrew the corner of the board thats on the ceiling ? But then you would see half a joist ..... :RpS_sneaky:
 
These cock ups do happen from time to time with multiple trades on a job, but the fault is with the sparks IMHO. As the 'main contractor' I'd expect if anyone had to take it on the chin it'd be the builder.

From your point of view, if it was me on principle I'd tell him to pay for the extra work or fcuk off. The other choice is to take the hit and just do it.

If you do take the second option make sure you get it back plus interest further down the line.

Yeah just a neatish cut between 2 bits of frame, this is why I thought it was going to be a hatch of some sort.

The plumbers ran all there pipework up to the original ceiling line prior to it being framed and boarded, I'm guessing the sparks didn't and they have ran there's after the ceiling was put up hence the hole in the new ceiling, there's some thick cable up there that I expect there rods couldn't fish through, so they pulled through by hand.

Tell him to get to **** the sparks should pay withy didn't they just take a board down and pit it back up? Exactly they couldn't be arsed patch it then once it's painted you might get another call.

Thinking about it, there's your answer. If you can patch it whenever tell him you'll do it just after he puts £150:00 in your hand or Satan gets snow on his toes whichever comes first. :RpS_thumbsup:

Every time I survey a job I have so many question, cos you know what are you doing and how and what it takes.Next time ask! It's for free and it doesn't hurt:-) .
Saying that, every trade founds a way to pass the shite to other trade and it's down to us if we will accept it or not.Practice and experience are the ones to blame on in this case:RpS_sneaky:
 
60% your fault I'd say.
Lack of communication and lack of respect from the sparks and the builder, BUT one quick call would have solved this.
Bite the bullet, go back and patch it (with the proviso that a patch is always a patch etc.).
He gives you other work so just bung an extra 20 on the next few jobs and - if he has you by the balls - get busy finding other work for yourself, then you're no longer obliged to him :RpS_thumbup:
 
The builder knows the sparks should should have put board back he told you it was ready he should have checked himself . Tell him you will patch it go there smash all to bits and tell him to **** off

Are you really 6'8" ?
 
Id have queried it myself, not many loft hatches in bedrooms, and a hole 1 ft x 1 1/2 ft in a suspended ceiling with no liner round it, isnt very loft hatchy. Id be inclined to say your at fault, however the sparks have been proper lazy.
 
Id admit I'm part to blame on the grounds that I should of made 100% sure that I should of double checked before I layed on but as I said It really didn't look out of place.

The sparks and the builder were there all day, the room was swept.out and there were 2 bags of.skim there ready for me, I had no reason to.think that it wasn't ready to go.


If he was just a randomer that give me a crap job I would just get my money or remove what I done and whatever else comes with it if he didn't want to pay.

I'm in a catch 22 he gives me nice little jobs in and out and is good with the money, so I dont want to upset him, but at the same time I want him to pull the spark on it and get him to except he's part to blame to.


I'm.going to call I toolbox meeting! Haha
 
Just tell customer to fit a big lampshade!! Or tell um its a new style of extractor!! Everyone having um these days ha!:RpS_thumbsup:
