Wood/brick join

The brickwork at my front door has a section of wood at the edge into the reveal (plastic beading is attached to the wood). See pic

There was a large crack at the wood/brick joint which I want to correct.
Is this a good approach:
Take plaster back to brick 2-3cm from edge of brick
Nail metal mesh to the wood under plastic bead and extend to the 2-3cm of exposed brick
One coat plaster/ undercoat & skim over the lot

Any other suggestions?
