what i like to do if i get a ceiling which has loose bits over old lath is take out the loose plaster (carefully) wet down the laths, then i find if you mix driwall adhesive and bonding together it sticks to the laths like shite on a stick, dont forget to push hard enough to send the plaster through the lath for the overlap (mechanical key).

scrim the joints and skim

p.s. work diagonal to the laths to stop it dropping off so much when you are putting it on ;)

I like to put butterscotch angel delight in it applied by catapult.

Just as it sets I add some parmesan cheese, just to add a little continental flair to it.
