there is no shortage of plasterers. what the builders mean is there is a shortage of CHEAP plasterers
Bang on @malc they aren't liking the fact they are starting to have to pay realistic prices and they can see it making a dent in their profits.

I can't get renderers that are competent in all systems, I can't get labourers/ improvers, I can't get scaffolders there all busy and under supplied, I can't get roofers to alter roofs we need altering for ewi, I can't get a plumber anytime soon to sort out my boiler at home there all mad busy. I guess it depends what part of the country you live in.

It did say the shortage of plasterers is in the east. There's certainly no shortage in the north west!

Skimmers are ten a penny but I guess there's an element of truth to it, I speak to a few gaffers across a few trades and there all struggling to find good reliable lads paying good rates., subbies and/or on the books. I'm turning stuff away because I've a full order book and I can't find decent lads and because it's time of year, and I don't want loads on the go in winter. They'll be a shortage of trades in a few years, the last government cut apprentices and encouraged the university route, and with the amount of new houses they'll have to build over the next few years.

I think as with lots of things in this country its regional...

example - syorks - traditional blue collar grafters mines, steel works etc..

these types of places bread generation after generation of toughened but poor academic men...I know its a generalization but you get my drift..

these people have no asparations at school why would you your fathers either unemployed or on poor money in some dead end job etc..

the building game is natural pool for these by this point not academic enough for electrics, plumbing even joinery..

tadddaaaa plasterers,brickies,labourers are born...

conversely total opposite in affluent southern pockets areas with money and white coller regions tradesmen are few and clear up!!!

I often log onto hear and think id love to see how some of these plastering rockstar gods on here would fair being given a different area to be born and have to earn there living in...

It's the same for all of us everyday where ever you live ..every job be it site or domestic its bump and grind ,every now and then I do a job I enjoy but you probably right about the area thing .
There is defo truth in what owls said about getting people round at the minute though and I hope it carries on into 2016,I hope they do build 400 000 houses cus it's about time we all got a flipping pay raise without thinking we need the job we quote.

As was said there has been a bit of a push for university route and I don't know about yourselves but were I live I think everyone's s**t feared of going into construction because of the recent downturn. it's only a matter of time before the demand comes surely.

For a decent lad what rates would you be prepared to pay ? Let's say EWI pebbledash finish

In Ireland at the moment a proper-not a skimer dober- plasterer with transport tools etc, 200euro before tax .

Just saying & the jogging days av long gone . Sorry if you feel a little upset but I'm a legit guy

Often while trowelling up a big ceiling, I find my self humming the tune to 'sometime' and wonder if Andy wasn't such a wonderful dancer would the lads be recognized as the rock gods the undoubtedly are.

there is a shortage of good plastering tutors ------anybody fancy hanging up the trowel and giving it a go

I cant see rates climbing much .....too many cheap contractors going in to tight to win the sites.

House builders are made up with it.

Exactly. We see these stories every time there is a tiny bit of growth and thats exactly what they mean - scared of rates going up 20p so they cause a chain reaction of courses and import.

Besides im not sure if I want it to get busier ....tradesmen out there at the minute are terrible.
Its just a battle fixing everyone elses mess.

Sinse christmas push ive seen top half of houses pulled down...top windows ripped back out.....6 bay windows destroyed....ground working gangs sacked and owed thousands.....scaffolds collapsed between gables.....the shittest spreads in the world......timber frame houses pulled to bits .....sparks chasing nearly a full house after painted....list goes on and on.

Renderers who know all the systems are almost impossible to find. Even quite a few competitors only specialise in old systems or bagged render only.

I have always wanted to be in the know. Obviously there are some area's I like to avoid if possible. At the moment hand applied anyhing because of my shot elbow.

But getting anyone who knows machine applied is impossible. I do get the odd one who only wants training up then bugger off back to his mate. Give them a wide berth. The times I have had strangers ring up saying if I teach them how to spray and finish mono they will work for free!

Cheeky buggers! They should be paying me!
