K-Rend vs Lime Render for New Extension

Hi

We are mid-build of our new kitchen extension made of concrete /bricks (1940s semi). Builder is pushing us to go for K-Render as opposed to traditional sand cement due to the lower maintenance and colour options available. However, I have read mixed reviews of K-Render including higher cost, mould and the inability to patch repair as and when required.

Rest of the house is already in Sand cement render that is painted, but we quite like the idea of a lime render.

Question: K Rend vs Sand/Cement vs Lime Render, which option is best for a London home and most cost effective?

Professional /Expert advice welcomed.

Thanks

Lime render is the most expensive, sand and cement is the cheapest,K-rend is s**t,what is the finish on your existing sand and cement render

Lime render is the most expensive and not required on a new build.
As you like a plain finish. I would go for a base coat like HP12 with a full fibre mesh give strength against future cracking. Finish with a O C R [one coat render] this will give a quality finish to receive your decoration.

Thanks Stewie, I am not 100% convinced on K-Rend neither. I have attached pic of the current render which is a painted finish (15+ years old).

Quite like the contrasting render look (photo 2) - is this a K-Render finish do you think?

We just want to ensure we get the best quality finish and that is durable and not susceptible to cracking or mould and won’t break the bank!

Thanks Malc, very helpful. Is the HP12 finish cheaper than K-Rend? Also, would have an idea what type of finish is on the photo attached with the dark grey extension?

Krend do a lime render

From their K Lime range

I did a few hundred metres with their 213 setting

(It's like a lime version of OCR, not bad to use went up well and finished nice.)

But if you're penny pinching - good work is not cheap. And good materials are not cheap.

Over 90% of the time it ends in tears and problems when your shaving money off what you're constantly going to see.

That's what people forget at your stage.

Very fair and valid points. Will also look at Lime Render. Builder originally quoted for white painted render for our new build. However, reckons k-rend is the best option though more expensive. Presumably, the labour charge for monocouche vs sand/cement would be less, as painter won’t be needed?

I would say that the render has a float/sponge finish.

Not a lot in it for me

Mono Vs s+c is not much difference in labour charge.

Way more to buy the product though and no return visit to paint.

Weigh it up, not a lot in it.

Once again, Electrician - Plumber - Kitchen fitter - Builder have all ripped the arse out of “the budget” and the finishing trades ie Plasterer - Painter are getting their balls squeezed!
