Cleaning the sockets is all well and good, but if the socket is 2-3" sunk it's a bit of a job getting it perfectly shaped to the box so there's no gaps when face screwed back.

I agree!!! I get as much work from being clean as I do the quality of work. That's not to say my work isn't to a good standard but people have the perception all plasterers go in, blitz the place and walk out leaving it looking like a building site.
