This is scary I actually agree with you, I am fortunate that covid has only affected my personal life (going out etc) and not livelihood as I was winding down anyway. Mental health issues have always been around with many suffering before covid, many on here have said there are busy as ever so hopefully when restrictions ease and we can socialise again things will improve for everyone.

There must be room for error to a degree. Like starting up you’re own business.. the first few years learning how it all works. I never new anything about tax years or book keeping when I first started, missing records for this an that. If it was so strict on your every move everyone be f**k*d. Human dumb card. Maybe hmrc do random searches to keep everyone on there toes. Watch this I’ll get investigated now haha! Be living on the streets by Xmas.

They've also created a department with 1000 staff specifically to investigate covid grant fraud and given HMRC a 13% pay rise. Anyone thinking that the treasury aren't serious about getting as much back as they can is in for a shock I reckon.
And they wont stop at covid grant if found to be iffy income tax and vat would be next

Absolutely. Once they find an issue it's open season on your financial records from store loyalty cards through banking and on to private purchases going back the full 7 years. They'll come up with a figure you owe, if you can't prove a different figure accurately (with evidence) then you pay the amount they say or they'll clean you out, declare you bankrupt and on top can and do send people to jail.
Given that's the risk/downside is the amount worth it?
We're all running in circles even you its called life, you work to eat, even if you grow your own and live in a tent. Obviously there are some that do sweet FA and scrounge off the tax payer but even they're going round in circles just not running.

I too got investigated a few years ago, purely by chance I was told.
All extremely stressful (even though I knew I’d done it all by the book).
As said in a previous post, I don’t tackle cash jobs and the like so I’d nothing to hide. If you think hmrc won’t chase stuff up your extremely Naive.
