Hi all, I have been asked to do a front section of a house with Alpine finish. The owner has scraped off all the old stuff which was apparently loose and flakey, the S&C base coat underneath is sound although the devil float scratch is clogged up with Alpine. What should I use to prepare the surface prior to using the Alpine? I haven't used the stuff in about 25 years but back then I remember painting on a stabilizing solution the day before using the Alpine. Is SBR the best thing to use or neat PVA or stabilizing solution? How well does today's Alpine finish bond to a surface? Would I need to grind the surface to give the Alpine a key? Thanks

Not a clue on your problem as haven't done alpine in 8+ years myself but just wanted to ask u to stick a pic up when your finished the job. Love alpine, lovely finish

Never use pva on any external work mate. I know what your saying regard a key but lets face it you only spread alpine as thick as the agregate in it (4mm max) so your safe sbr day before and maybe another diluted coat prior to spreading? All dependant on conditions etc as with alpine you need as much time as you can get to rub and avoid piecings etc. Thats what id do anyway just dont spread it too thick like many do as it looks bloody awful. Best of luck and stick some pics up?? (y)

As I remember it was apply a coat of sbr 1:1 water and let dry. Then apply another just prior to spreading Alpine. The sbr needs to be just on the verge on going tacky when applying Alpine over it.
