Alright lads, been reading threads on here for a few weeks so though I'd come on. Thinking about getting back on the tools, was only plastering for about 4 years but didn't enjoy a lot of it as was contracting for a kitchen company plastering around newly fitted kitchens and getting work from my builder and rated people cost quite a lot to buy the leads. I do enjoy the job but probably didn't get in with a decent firm whom could give me regular work and have never done site work . My question is can a plasterer be competent in all aspects such as rendering, skimming, dry lining, fibrous plastering etc also could you plaster until your 50's 60's or would your body give up before? cheers

To many at it, your best going to learn how to clean toilets or become a secretary! Sorry, but you should also close your account as well while your at it because this is a dying trade and you'll be sorry you ever even thought about it

If a plasterer is'nt competent in the areas mentioned then he/she is'nt a plasterer.As regards fibrous work you should be able to do the basic cornice and centerpieces.It is a highly skilled area and best left to the experts who specialise in it.As regards dying young who knows.It certainly is hard on ones body.Much as we all moan about it few of us would do anything else.Thats because maybe we're all stone fcuking mad.
Yes u can be competent at all aspects of plastering bar coving lol..proper coving mind not that plasterboard s**t..as for your body yes there's more chance of being on the knackered shelf but I c it as getting old the body eventually gives way as u get older regardless of wat you do I know a spread who's in his 50s and he still runs around like f**k ye hes got tennis elbow etc frm time to time but sitting in a office all day typing can f**k ur fingers up and ur back..we are mad heads us plasterers for wat we put our body's thru but its life so f**k It Il take whatever aggro I get in later life to working in a shitty 9-5 job in a factory

Thanks for your replies lads. Was asking about being competent because I get the impression that if someone can skim they think they can do all the other aspects which i know isn't the case. I've mainly done internal work such as skimming and a bit of boarding, ceilings mainly, when I was contracting for this big kitchen firm. I'd love to be a master at all the aspects but it's tricky to get the experience esp as it's dog eat dog and time is money. Do you really think it's dying trade or do spreads need to progress with new technologies/materials etc also as speedskims and spats are popular and can allow you to get more meterage on do sites pull your pants down even more on the rates? Rates are dictated from where abouts in country u are etc and some firms will cream most money and some wont,Il b honest wen we subby work out all we take is 50p a m2 then give the lads the rest Id never be 1 of them blokes who creams off £1.50+ m2 as I think its scandalous how there can cream that money off ur wage..u can get more m2 on with speedskims etc but you still need to know how to use them as in the wrong hands ur work looks rough as..i don't think its a dying trade in 10-15 years I think there will be a shortage as I find young ens dont want to do it anymore..well there will be a shortage of proper time served spreads anyway

No brace ur self fellas I'm not directing this at anyone on here but as a tiler I've come to realise that not all plasterers are created equal the ratio of good spreads to bad is 1 good one for 9 bad ones so I'd say in time if ur works top notch things will fall in to place I've bin tiling 13 years this year and last year and this year was my best years things finally came together for me

It's all trades in general really there's to many people with "that'll do" mentally just look at this job I looked at yesterday the customer wanted advice on what to do I said rip it out and start fresh it's total dog s**t

That is s**t, but I will say as I'm sure you are aware that layinh big tiles in a brickwork fashion will often cause shadows on grout lines as they are near enough always banana shaped.

I been thinking the same for years, and I'm far from being the best myself! But very very rarely come across even OK plastering let alone great plastering!

Yeah I'm aware of the half bond issue but I've put two tiles face to face and there only slightly bent they could of got them hell of a lot flatter I'm a big advocate of the leveling spacers and they help keep lipase to a bare minimum or eliminate it completely

Ive tiled my 2 bathroom floors..easy as fook..did my splash back in bathroom which didn't go so well floors are alot easier than walls..
I think its funny wen sum1 cums on asking about rates tbh..i dnt care either way talking about rates but I try stick to the forum code

Been meaning to get the level system for awhile now. Far better job but still have to get few other items in first. Much you pay for it and the spacers.

That's just off top of my head but think there's few more items. Have 1000s worth of kit already but need to get more. Sold a lot of stuff when times where really bad here so need to get them all back since things are picking up.
