my mates skimming trowel just done its last set, the rivets have popped and it's in a sorry old state all bent up. Haven't purchased a mt for about 8 years now. My last two were crap. Even when you pick up a brand new one the rivets are showing right through the blade. A real shame because they were good trowels.

Buy an Extralite not the gold handled shite they take time to break in but still the best trowels on the planet by a country mile. Or is this a ploy to plug some new trowel??

Buy an extralite stainless steel i believe most are "preworn" now ffs

Personal choice pal the old guys who taught me used tyzack centenery trowels i hated them regard the handles but i had to spray his trowels at the end of the day with bike oil (didnt have wd40 then lol) and wrap meticulously with his oil soaked rags

College was no joke,,,that's we're the theory of plastering is important.
It separates the coursers who think they are no different from a Lad who served his apprenticeship.I hated college but to me 3 years at it was worth it.

I bought a mt carbon by mistake about a year ago, ill never look back.

I broke it in on sand cement for about 10 months and now dabble with it on skimming (bigger walls) finishes so well. Feels lighter than my stainless too.

I just purchased two mt xtra lite carbons, a 13 inch with wood handle and a 14 with a durasoft handle. If they are s**t I'll never get mt again. So basically in the space of a few hours I've gone from saying marshalltown is crap to doing a complete u turn and buying two

You won't go wrong with mt carbon steel.They take a bit of minding but there great for finishing skimcoat.

I'm liking my Tysack , 13" stainless steel. Comes pre warn but still takes a while to break in. It's lovely to use now and was only £20

Lad I work with got 1 by mistake was fuming..used it left In van for a week was a rite rust bucket

Wouldn't touch carbon.
Too much effort to keep them good.

I stopped using them when we started using hardwall instead of s/c years ago as that rusts them so fast, never had much of a problem with them other then drying after use

Do you mean that using carbons and hardwall makes them rust quicker?

Yes and bonding that's the reason I bought stainless years ago as they would rust in the van overnight

Funny you say that. Hardwalled an extension last week and used a carbon. Put the trowel down for 15 minutes and it started blackening straight away. Its a well broken in one. Had to keep on top of it, I thought it was sh!t local/hard water or something. I'd never noticed it that bad before.

Yeah bonding and hardwall does make them rust a bit. On sand and cement I always use a steel as it wears them in nice. Bonding etc iv always used steel but I can see why you might not want to. But I never used to keep my floating trowel that spotless anyway. I only really cleaned it up once it was ready to skim with

When it's cleaned and left black they don't really rust a lot. Not a lot more you can do unless you want to clean and oil it every night. Personally I can't see what the problem is with a float trowel with a little rust on it. It comes off in 5 seconds next time you use it
