Good links-to any on-line papers or articles to why renders/screeds fail ! or expansion and the use of expansion joints in rendering screeding and failures thancks for any good links
or storys :-)

render generally fail when the building has not been prep. to receive the render.
screeds fail on the day joint, or if the reinforcement is at the base .
when we worked for a major screeding co. they had material that you could remove hollow patches. by drilling the screed at the required spot and pumping the liquid under the screed.
if there is expansion joints in the building , we would fit movement beads over the joint.

Many reasons why render would fail. Too strong or weak a mix, rain hitting it, frost or rapid drying. Using too soft a sand is common. putting render up to or onto something that is expandable when the render is not. Out of date products, cheap mesh or plastic beads. Building movement. To many additives or the lack off. Mixing additives that are not compatible. Wrong preparation is common in failures. Not allowing drying/curing times in between coats

Cracks is as we know common and in new render it is not acceptable although a lot of the time it is down to building movement but proving it is difficult so we are guilty until proved innocent. I have a very good book on building cracks and it could get me out of trouble should I get stress cracks. Some cracks are down to the renderer but he may not have known he has done wrong until it is too late.

As for a book on failures? Never heard of one but there are advise sheets on how to do it right so doing the opposite would give you a failure.
