any tips for speeding sets up

Worse that goes wrong is one bit comes out crap you gotta pva and do again

I can't work for friends or family cos I feel obliged to either take nothing or do cheap only mate is your back pocket and getting paid nothing worse than doing a favour and your there all day thinking why did I agree to this
 
Hi mate silky/glossy paint my pal always throws a couple handfuls of multi in the pva it may not speed up your set but you won't be hanging around all day for the pva to take....screw fix got some good Lil site heaters on offer at the mo they would defo help

Only use unifinish to save time, had a half day of prep today so was confident if I pva'd first thing it would be dry for lunchtime...only just though in the end
 
If its silk paint go all over the wall using the corner of an old scraper chipping away little bits of the old skim to give your finish a good key to stick to then PVA. A bit more effort but wort it.

Throw in some cream of tartar or do a rolling hit mate
 
What size of bucket do you use? How big is your set? how long would it take you to use the bucket comfortably?

usually about a bag and a half for first coat....no idea how long it takes me, usually second coat after around 45 mins, lay on, have a fag, clean bucket, flatten, have a fag then sort my water out and second coat

That's where your going wrong you should be laying down straight away, there is 45 mins saved straight away and then probably another 30 with the gear pulling in quicker and use a tight coat to lay down, get your roughing on coat a bit thicker and mix slightly stiffer Putting on as flat as possible, over mix the first coat this will start to set quicker which will also make your laying down coat set quicker.

Cheers flynny, used to lay second coat on quicker but read a lot about second coating too soon is same as 2 coats from 1 bucket and after a slightly rippley problem i had I was trying to improve my behaviour...for a bit of context my normal sets are 2.30...always mix 1st coat reasonably stiff as usually going over s**t so find it helps getting slightly thicker coverage
 
You should of pva all of the next days hit and just go straight on the dry pva, i do that if im there for more than 1 day, done it today, in the morning, turn up, mix up and bang it on.

Same as but I use pre grit now done it today over boarded a ceiling and pre grit ready for tomorrow.

Nothing wrong with laying down with the same gear just mix it up with a drop of water but it will set quicker which is what you want if it's two mixes lay down straight away with the fresh gear.

Yeah ive done that, pva'd the whole room so going onto dry pva tomorrow...even that might speed it up a bit tomorrow as was still slightly tacky what I went over today

Am the same. Can't remember the last time I used PVA. Micro is a dream to skim over and it dries pretty quick so no need to leave it overnight. And you can water it down.

Throw a small double handful of cement in to the water before u start,gove it a good birl around. Should just give it a wee bit of bite, and bring it in quicker. Same with second coat, but adjust amount of cement to the size of your next mix accordingly. Shouldn't be enough cement to compromise the finish, or make it set too quick on you so you're under any pressure. Should just shorten setting time an hour or so. Make sure it's a good bag all the same, don't want to mix gritty cement through ur finish.
 
@Lodan. Perfect opportunity to try a big hit - your a year in to this job now, stretch yourself and you'll do it. You have a delayed set with glossed walls/cold room, take advantage of it and this time tomorrow you'll be a different spread. Prep yourself in the morning - big brekky and you'll do it.
