Artex -- Skim Over or Plasterboard over...

Alright , just thought I would post and see how every one else does their artex jobs. Overboard then skim or Scrape back high spots, PVA and then 2 coats of Multi. I personally use the 2nd method. Cheers folks :RpS_biggrin:
 
Thanks m8. I will usually scrape, pva twice then skim when 2nd coat is tacky. Although I have come across a few jobs where the ceilings had to be sheeted.
 
Do what ever the customer and you are happy with. You dont need to over board every bit of artex you see thats just silly

No guarantee for over skims of artex ... always explain this and the reasons why ... Overboard if poss ... if customer is tight then get a signed quote saying you've explained that it could crack due to the existing substrate ... saves any hassle or complaints
 
if theres no cracks on an artex ceiling.. no reason why there should be cracks after its skimmed..
 
Thats the way I do it @ adamd although I dnt get a signed quote. Might be a good idea to start askin for 1.
 
I wouldn't scrape the high spots, just bond them and skim. A lot of the artex ceilings contain asbestos so better to bond or board if you can.
 
I have seen aloy of these over skimming artex posts recently. . Still can believe that not many people get them tested for azzy.. I never scape any ceiling or overboard it until I have the test to show its negative.. I personally overskim n if needed I tell the customer the situation. .they will either pay for it the proper way ot not.. dont see why everyone should b comprising there health and everyone elses....

Not having a dig at anyone just saying my opionion..!!!

I've seen me do both and been successful and on another occasion I've lost out and lost the ceiling, got as far as polishing the lid up and the turn for the worst happened....;whole ceiling pealed off! Now if I can I will try and overboard but depends on how much the client is willing to pay!
 
Defo I wouldnt scrape the high spots without the customer getting a test done. Sorry folks should have wrote 'get test done, scrape high spots off , then pva and skim.
 
Yea defo.. I had one tested that was done in 2002..n was positive..

Its there choice at end of day I just completed a job that was stipple artex on a dormer bungalow. . Another guy.quoted before me was gonna rip it all down.. I told them about the risk s n I got the job..
 
the customer 9 times out of 10 dont want to pay i tell them the risks if they want me to do it they scrape it the other 1 dont call back
 
Yea that is true.. not alot u can do about it. . . I have walked away from a fair few because of it.. mainly because I dont want to be involved with it.. if they want to pull it down then so be it.. not on my time

its only recently iv had this attitude with it after a mate of mine got aspestosis what ever its called hes in the hospital getting his lungs drained dont think hes gonna be around for long, hes only 40
 
Yea dont blame u.. doesnt mata what methods people use I.e pva it before pulling it or wetting it etc.. still gets in the air.. n it only takes one fibre. To get into your system
 
i judge each artex ceiling on condition, if it is on lime wash/ distemper, overboard, if there has been water damage, overboard. if condition is good the pattern not to thick, one coat of pva and skim. if the condition is good and pattern thick or fan pattern, pva, bonding and skim
 
Did one the other week.polybonded and skimmed just as I finished the first coat it all started peeling off.overboard every time for me.
 
Dont want to start a new thread. I orderd myself a new 14 inch Nela plastering trowel today. Paid roughly £41 includin vat and delivery which I thought was not a bad deal... Anybody on here tried these?
 
They look the part Jamesh271. At £41 I canny really complain. See how it goes ;)

Sorry to hear that Jessop. .......... Is he - or did he used to be - a smoker?
 
I know a nurse who told me that of all the asbestosis patients that she's worked with all but one were smokers or ex-smokers.
