Hi guys

I have been asked by a mate at work to reskim his dads bathroom I've said £250 that's ceiling and 4 walls would you say that's fair or not ? I haven't seen it but my mate said there's no making good to do its literally just reskim

I'd say it's pretty fair as long as there isn't loads of the wall blown ect that you have to take it off and make good. But if it is just get in and skim over I'd say not a bad days money/work.

Is your mate a plasterer? I wouldn't price a wall without looking at it. Is the suite in? How big is it? What substrate? Is it 10th floor flat? What's parking like? Is there other bathrooms or is his dad likely to come in and take a hangover pat halfway through a gauge? To many variables to price off of my mate says.

I'll second that, balls to going in blind. Did it once, a kitchen 30 mile away sparky mate said it's all painted wants a re-skim, painted lining paper could of stabbed him. Livid with myself for not going over to look, once bitten twice shy.

I use to get £350 for a bathroom all day long for a kitchen/bathroom fitter...

I use to go in blind to them to be honest but the chap knew what I wanted and how I wanted and the flat rate of £350 was what i charged pretty much no matter what... sometimes it was just the ceiling and sometimes they were in a tight mess... rarely took longer than a day and I would get at least 2 a week to do... nice easy earner :D

I work for a plumbing firm mainly patching up ceilings where the plumbers cut through to find leaks so when I'm asked how much to do a job for someone I get lost so that's why I come on here to get advise.

My advice is don't sell yourself short. go and have a look as people mates or not will take the mick and generally have no idea what plastering is about . you can end up spending a lot of time just sheeting up .prepping walls and cleaning up after . It work that never gets taken into the equation when other people tell you about a job.

Get them to send some pictures for you from the jobs, can make life a bit easier sometimes but you can still get caught out with it.

How long have you been a plasterer Dave?
Im not lol I'm a plumber but I worked for a firm a few years OK doing kitchens and bathrooms and they wanted us to do everything including plastering . I shat myself at first but tried it and through listening to the older blokes and using their tricks and tips and a lot of practice and I mean a lot of practice I finally got it but still learning really but have to say I love it and wish I had never spent all that money I n plumbing.

All right Dave?

Now, as it happens, I've asked my mate about your little problem, and he says your mate is a pillock.......my mate's not usually so aggressive, but he says if your mate wants to make something of it he'll meet him anywhere.....

The suite is staying in? That is unrealistic...... take twice as long and won't look right at the end..... allow 2 days at least, them bits above the picture rail are fiddly and take time and then your going round sinks, radiator and toilet..... refuse to do it with sink toilet and rad/towel rail in...... it's not worth it

What's the best stuff to use ?

Feb bond blue grit is readily available. You may not need it, but the last bathroom ceiling I skimmed had shiny paint on so played safe and blue gritted it the day before. Needs 24 hrs to dry though.
Went to price up a house refurb the other week and while I was there, the neighbour asked me to have a look at the ensuite. Whole ceiling had de-laminated and had only be skimmed about 6mths previously. Probably down to the shiny paint on the ceiling or they'd used uni! :D

I do a lot of these , very few of them are a handy day!
As said the paint is usually the killer so needs grit or else its arsing about patching the boarding and dubbing out
Then all the covering up through the house etc
Plus as a general rule never do anything without seeing it first , dead handy , just a quick lick/skim , be away by lunchtime etc is usually code for want it cheap and know fine rightly the amount of prep in it.

Had a look at the photos and looks crappy , if your not a plasterer then your gonna struggle as be hollows and heavy coats all over the place , awkward with the suite staying in too.
Give it a go if you want but thats not gonna be a handy one for ya! Just take your time , if you do it mix 30/70 bond coat and cover the wall first , wait till it takes up a bit and try 2 coats of skim , allow yourself two days

Or they didn't even pva it most likely. Pva will stick to shiny paint esp if you make it a little stronger. It just slides a little if not careful.

That's good advice.

That's what I do a lot now as I just can't be bothered to get home to go price a job up . Plus you can put a bigger price in when it's not face to face lol

Thanks for the great advise mate because I come from a plumbing background I can have the basin , rad and toilet out in no time was thinking of going down that route . was thinking of doing a day rate on it to cover myself .
