Anyone else having this problem? Started putting on at 8.30, a 3 bag hit, it's now 11.25 and I've just managed to get a first trowel over it, going to be a 5 hit at this rate!!!

Old bag normally does this... I had it a couple of months ago but the bag was old and had been in the guys van for months...

Stick with it because when it starts to go its will go mega fast :-(
@BritishGypsum may also have other ideas :-)

Brand new gear, 07/05-2014 date on it. Not from Jewsons either, because we know that stuff is ****.

Are you suggesting BG send Jewsons different multi to everyone else?

This is about as daft as the bloke on here who thought the B&Q finish bags were inferior.

I reckon if you used the same stuff next week with different weather conditions, you wouldn't have a problem.

Not suggesting they have different plaster, maybe how it's stored. I just know that all the plaster supplied from the local Jewsons trowels up differently from most other suppliers.

iv noticed it few times before wen buy mats from diffrent places
i just always put it down to were its stored i.e outdoor shed or in heated building like wickies
or the turn around of gear they get thru like wickies i no get thru the pallets aday round here were as other places it sits a lot longer

Well, the first hit I put on this morning still hasn't browned off yet, that's been on for 6 hours now, that's not down to the temperature.

To be fair to bg the multi's been spot on just lately trowels up lovely, you just have to keep the water off it.

Humidity has more to do with it!

I had the same last monday morning in a cold damp property, by the end of the week, the windows were open And a dry, warmish breeze blowing through & it was like different gear.

Next time it's really hot & stormy and about to piss down, take note of how long the plaster takes to set.

has the water that you are using to mix the plaster been through a water softener?

Don't think so. It was an outside tap, but I'll check in the morning. Why, have you found that it makes a difference, not something I'd ever thought of.

you need impurities in the water to set the plaster. a water softener will kill the impurities and alter your setting time.

I've had that, you can tell as your knocking it up that it doesn't look right, but you chuck it on anyway, then spend the next 4 hours wishing you hadn't!!

Everyone who's been asking about retarding multi is gonna be taking bottles of water to work now that's been through a water softener instead of using cream of tartar for a 12m2 ceiling :RpS_laugh:
I can see them jotting it down :rolleyes)

You didn't throw any dry-lining adhesive in it did you?

Thats what the Durafinish is like to use. They still claim that stuff can stick to some backgrounds without any bonding agent, has anyone ever used it like this and it's still there?
I over skimmed an Artex kitchen ceiling around 5 years ago and it's still there but didn't like the price to use regularly.
