Anyone know what would be a safe/maximum height for building 18" x 9" pillars, i.e. blocks laid flat? Punter is wanting me to build a 9" solid wall about 7m long @ 5ft height between his and next-doors rear extensions and then to complete the boundary between gardens by building a series of pillars which he intends to attach timber fencing, but I'm just a bit concerned that 18" x 9" wouldn't be strong enough @5ft high. Distance between each pillar is about 3m.

use concrete blocks layed side on in 2's will be fine up too 5ft m8 no probs this is for fences yer there going too be some posts lol are you rendering rthem after then

Bit iffy realy mate with no weight on top easily pushed over, if i was doing it it would be brick and a half piers with a reinforcing rod through the middle into the foundation and concreted.

Thanks Lucius, they don't want bricks, looking for blocks to match the 7m wall, so am I better off going for the farmers friends blocks, re-bar through it & concrete?

Yep 9inch hollow concrete blocks, you can get 2 rods in these but make sure the rods are concreted in the foundation

Nice one:RpS_thumbup: and yeah, I'm thinking about the fence he's fixing to them, gonna be a windcatcher, so I'm gonna price for a 600 x 600 slab, maybe 150 depth?

Ide be looking at a pad of 18inches square and at least that deep depending on ground i may be a bit over the top but what does a bit of ballast and cement cost against many nights bad sleep.

Blocks are 18" so thats why I was saying I'd make the base bigger by having it 600 x 600 ............or 24inches in 'feet and English' as I call it :RpS_thumbup:
Same as you......I'd rather go over than under on founds.

Question: Do you bend to re-bar like an L-shape or just stick it into the base like a spear?

Bend it if you can and when pouring the concrete bed the first block in the concrete if its wet enough you can sink the block in a couple of inches and get your Rebar in the right place

Hi dear nice question i want to say that use concrete blocks layed side on in 2's will be fine up too 5ft m8 no probs this is for fences yer there going too be some posts lol are you rendering rthem after then.
