Blotchy plaster - need help!

Hi everyone, your advice is desperately needed, please.

We live in a Victorian terrace that has lots of damp issues in various rooms. We commissioned a survey from an independent damp surveyor who recommended lime plaster. We selected some builders who are damp specialists. They are members of the Property Care Association and the Federation of Master Builders so we are hoping this will help us if there is an issue.

The pantry was stripped down to brick work then a backing plaster/PVA and a skim were used. Prior to starting the work informed them we were advised to use Lime/breathable plaster. We have seem a couple of lime plaster bags and lots of multi-surface plaster and some gypsum bags in the house.

The skim coat was added two weeks ago and we are noting that the finish is not as smooth as other plaster we have had done. Its blotchy and a little rough so I have gently sanded it using 320 grit sand paper. Attached are photos of the finish. Pictures 1 and 2 show the blotchy walls and picture 3 is of the left hand wall and seems to be ok.

Can you help us to identify why the plaster is blotchy?
Do you think they have mixed gypsum with lime plaster?
Is this ok to do?
What would be the issues if they have?

Many thanks,

You have damp problems of sorts /?
Worst thing you can do is let any damp surveyors in your door .....Them organisations for your builder , are for clown outfits.... (That work says it all unfortunately) ..

You would be best asking on here the best way to solve your exact problem ...

Dollar is wrong on this occasion
Your damp proof surveyor was correct
However you’ve been done over by the builder, they may have used a lime backing plaster but they’ve used multi finish to skim
I’d say the problem you’ve got there is your backing plaster is allowing the damp from the walls to come forward and it’s blistering the gypsum based multi finish, which is hygroscopic meaning it attracts the water and salts
It needs hacking off back to brick, ideally leaving to dry out for a period of time then starting again
Before any finish work is done you need to find the cause of the damp and fix, if you don’t no matter what plaster you use it will eventually come back
Where abouts are you? There’s loads on here who know the crack

He’s right because he’s recommended hacking off and redoing in lime plaster
If he was a fraud he would have recommended chemical dpc injection, then damp proof membrane tacked onto walls

The property care association and federation of master builders are after subscriptions unfortunately it doesn’t mean anything being a member other than you’ve paid
Federation of Master Builders got a very bad reputation some years ago, and attracted some of those undercover journalist types.

I hear they've since made efforts to improve.

I still wouldn't put much faith in them though.

Some damp surveyors know their stuff, but should have also advised how to stop the damp, not just replaster with lime. Think Tom has called it right here.

We used to be in FMB years ago, it’s a load of rubbish really just another overhead
