Boarding over a ceiling

Hi, I need to put plasterboard over an old ceiling but I can't tell where the joists are to screw into, so any tips on the best way to do it?

Thanks

The ceiling.

The places where the hammer doesn't make a hole are the joists.

Oh i see.

I have been using a drill to drill either side of the joist to mark them out but it's difficult to do from above as a lot of it's boarded over, and it's filled with loose insulation, which keeps falling through. I can do it from below but im worried i may hit a pipe or cable.

it's also a very old ceiling so if i start bashing it with a hammer it might come down.

Screwdriver hammer pencil at ready once you've found them do both sides of the ceiling then get yourself a string line screw screws on one side then pluck the other side.
Also would be a good idea to use 6by3 and get your self some dead man clamps b@q two is ideal.. That way or you can struggle.

So take up a few planks upstairs and see what the crack is.and drill gently. You'll feel the bit go through the ceiling right enough.

Do you intend to get a plasterer to skim the ceiling? Because he'll overboard it in about ten minutes for not very many pounds and save you all the trouble.
Find one then every 40cm be abother

Watch out for joins so do both sides ceiling make sure matches
