Breaking in a new trowel

Absolutely spot on. My 14" trowel is around 10 years old but is far from sharp but produces the most awesome finish!!!!! I also have a new gold permashape which after a few jobs is excellant

Mine is a gold permashape too. sadly I haven't used it yet.

The gold permashapes are a pig to break in but once worn they work a damn treat. A bit of sanding with wet and dry works well just to take the new ground surface down a bit

The new ground surface has been worn down on a stone flag in my garden, but it still has the grooves in the middle.

I am unsure why the gold permashape trowels are such a pain to break in. could you explain why?
I did notice that it was a little harder to break in than a cheaper trowel I bought for rough work. but unless the steel is better quality I have no idea why.

I think the steel used for the blade is extra hardened for durability which means technically it should last longer but makes it a pain the break in

How come the gold finish wears off so quickly? I thought the steel used for these trowels was actually gold, not just covered with a gold finish.

LOL. Gold trowels are exactly the same as their SS counterparts. They give them a gold coating and a gold stripe on the handle :-)

Really I thought they were heat treated to retain the shape and the gold comes from a action in the steel which is a by product that easily brushes off

I know the trowel isn't actually made out of gold. but if the gold finish wears off after the first few times you use them, why bother coating them in the first place. why not just have the normal stainless version of the same trowel without the gold finish.
is there any real difference?

They started out as limited edition trowels but became popular so they decided to continue manufacturing them :-)

Come and work alongside my Boss, he'll tell you how good you are or not!
I have been working with a trowel for nearly a year now, on site NOT a classroom & although my confidence is growing the truth is I still have a lot to learn.
Keep at it friend.
Do you want to edit this post know we know he's **** at rendering?

You might want to edit this post so people know you are **** at typing.

Anyone know best place to get a steel one? Seem to be hard to get hold of at a decent price?! Want to start breaking one in!

I apologized for my earlier comments and yet you keep on at me.
I'm as chilled out as I can be. I just didn't expect to be called a ******* idiot while asking like minded people for advice.
