Can I re plaster a bad job with 1 more coat ?

Hi Guys,

New to plastering,decided to take the plunge and skim my bedroom started with the chimney Brest but only managaged to get one coat on the plaster went off at a dramatic rate !! looked good till it went dry but now not so good! Can I just put another skim over freshly done plaster ? If so any tips on controlling the suction and any other advise please

You may have needed a few more coats of pva before you started and then it wouldn’t have gone off so fast. You’ll definitely need several coats now over fresh plaster. Or buy some pre grit

I will post some pics when I’m home, I was hoping I could do the job with just one more skim over but your the pro. I’ve heard it will go off even faster on fresh plaster is that right ? Ant other tips to get the right finish would be helpfull?

Any experienced plasterer wouldn’t be able to achieve a decent finish with one coat of plaster over a dried out wall. Plenty of pva and two coats.

Put both coats on out of the same bucket, so it's no difference in time one or two anyway. The second coat is to help fill in any little sins you left the first time round - the idea is that the coat on the wall will be a little bit harder than the one you're putting on. That means that it will smooth out. It also means that once it's gone off, you're back to square one and you'll always need two coats. Just ask @Andy g

Just be sure to put plenty PVA on and bead it up again - no going up to the bead from last time.

Cheers for the advise Stevie, also can I ask you and any other members what would be your recommendation for a all round trowel?
I don’t want to be carrying 3 trowels for jobs around the house I’ve heard the medi flex are good but I want to lay on and flatten in with the same trowel?

You keep away from fancy trowels. 14" Marshaltown is what you want.

Keep away from that Welsh t**t as well. Last time I listened to him and his fancy trowel idea, I made a complete arse of the whole of the front of a building - double wide kitchen/living room. Looked all right until the sun came through a side window the next morning.

No bother mate it’s a Marshalltown I have think it was a cheap one they had on sale in bnq the old man bought it for me as he knew I was keen on getting my house plastered.

Point taken stay away from the welsh t**t
 
Ypu want a mediflex mate to finish . .......... i can get you one thats been used bout 5 times . Fantastic must have trowel
 
Get loads of trowels and spats........
Like a selection box of biccies is miles better than a single pack of digestives.....
You’ll prefer some to there’s and always have a favourite.....but it’s lovely having loads to pick from......
