When your on hop up / scaffold little finger on top of your head u should be able to touch the ceiling with your thumb , if your to low it makes it hard work on your muscles and dont be to high that you have to crouch

Ideally when setting up for a ceiling what i was told as an apprentice and it aint done me wrong since is, whatever you are working off should be at a height so that when you spread out your hand and place it above your head with your thumb tip touching your scalp the tip of your little finger should be touching the boards. this is why i know what height stands i need to set batterns off for 8ft and 9ft ceilings

told the same also if you fall throw away your trowel in case of injuring yourself, never forgotten it.

Have you not thought about planking room out? pain in arse, but its a dream .... It would be worth it if your suffering.

tbh john ive never worked on a planked out room....I imagine its a real pain in the arse as you say setting up...I dunno mate don't know what the answer is for me tbh im hoping that all these spats on poles improve over time:RpS_thumbup:

Never had probs with my back until 1 yr ago and it was from workin out of the mortar-bin, convienient until u get to the bottom.
Steps are right out for ceilings, it just cant be a good way of workin cause u cantwork an area easily and always twisting which is the worst shi1t ever. Plank out the ceilings, keeps the labourer in work an all. Stretches in the morn right before u start laying on, our shitty assed damp climate + wet work helps feck all either. we all keep the faith in this in this game but in all honesty it's always against us.:-(

Not really that bad yes stilts in the van are easier and quicker but you can't beat working off good open boarded scaff

Suffer terribly with bad back...tried crates,steps,hop-ups,stilts, even just bought a speedskim and pole to try and alleviate a bit....

No matter what I use always seem to ache whilst doing/after even when trying not to over stretch and even on tiddlers etc

What do you thinks worse for a bad back and why?:RpS_crying:

Getting the correct platform height - via the finger/thumb test as said - is good for stopping your shoulder and arm from aching like fook but I reckon that your back aching is more to do with it being knackered through injury/ wear & tear to start with :RpS_thumbdn:
It may be how you're applying the gear that's not helping (do you 'push' the gear on or 'pull'? if that makes sense to ya). Personally, mine aches 7 out of 10 after boarding a ceiling but only 3 or 4 out of 10 after skimming it. Both jobs you are putting pressure on your spine, but every back [injury] will be different. Get a scan marra and take it from there.........

never really had a problem with my back until today, done 2 big ceilings today and i felt it like bend backwards at the base if that makes sense, fook me im in agony now, im just glad im on walls tomorrow.

You know, after all the to-ing and fro-ing we do with this sh1t, I can't think of another way to describe how I put it on. It is quite sexy innit :RpS_thumbsup:
