Ceiling boarding no skim

Hi, hoping for some advice as a first timer. I'm in the process of renovating and have taken the ceilings down. In the future I'll get someone in to skim over these, but I'm hoping to save some much needed money by boarding myself. The boards won't be getting skimmed for a few months yet.

Joists are 400mm apart. I've had conflicting opinions, but I'm hoping I can get away without noggins if using 12.5mm board? I'll be using 1800x900 square edge boards to make it a bit lighter.

Also grateful to know whether I should tape the joints now, or leave this until the plasterer comes in to skim over in a few months?

Any advice much appreciated.

If your going to leave boards for month tape ceiling use skim to hold the scrim remember to brush or spunge nice and flat pva all plasterboard to stop suction before plastering if left for months

Will be better off using 2400 x 1200 if they’re 400 centres. Every board would be a cut otherwise. Save you money to

If you want to work to spec all ceilings should have perimeter noggins, no matter what board you use.
If your boarding is shoddy or you start messing about with tapes and sealing the boards it might cost you more in the long run than if you just got a decent tradesman in in the first place.

Hello Hockeyrocks,

what prior experience do you have related to boarding ? Do you have the right tools ie drywall screwdriver or screw adapter ?

Had to tape joint a ceiling, high and couldn’t get to it off tower to be able to skim it
Tried gyproc ready mix too there omg that stuff sets hard , grit 80 to even break it down a touch
Tradeline 120 grit lovely stuff
 
Also been bedding in with on some jobs I paper tape then skim if it’s quality job
Tbf it’s quite enjoyable

I understand you think you might be saving money by doing this yourself and having them plastered later on but I'd advise against it. First of all if you haven't boarded a ceiling before your most likely going to get it wrong or end up doing more work that you need to picking the correct board size for easier centre matching and less waste saves time and money. If the rest of the renovation is completed and you want someone to plaster later on its a complete backward process. It's easier for a plasterer which in turn means you would probably get a better price if they board and skim the lid of an empty room compared to a finished one fitted with flooring etc. If the room is painted even the best neatest tidyest spreads will drop some plaster when doing a lid. Get some prices from spreads for what you need doing. Ask in this forum for anyone local to you to pop round and give you a price.
 
In my opinion it's agro plastering old boards, what you save in boarding it yourself you'll lose in money as you'll get charged for any making good (badly cut boards, screws not in properly) and having to glue them all up. Honestly better all round paying spread to do it all. It's bad enough going over other plasterers prep let alone someone who may not really know what they're doing (no offense, I have seen some good work by customers before though I won't lie).

Use full boards - no cuts then.

I'd nog the edges just in case of any ... well, I just would. - nogging the centre is for 600 ceilings - usually on trusses.
 
@Mark done why the angry button. If you disagree then say so. Whole point behind a forum is everyone can express opinion and share advice and help if others are doing something wrong
