Ceiling crack one week after new skim

woman I plastered a ceiling for years ago rang me 2 weeks later, she said I have a big long crack, I replied well you have had 7 kids what do you expect:RpS_blink:
 
Heyup fellas I got a couple of ideas for the crack in ceiling problem you,ll love my ideas honest:RpS_biggrin:, if it,s nice and straight widen it and make a nice big 2 inch expansion joint, look a real treat with down lighters highlighting it.
Othe idea is my own secret method this one,s particularly clever my zippee method , what you do is glue a zip like you have on coats trousers etc, see ideas is if the sparks or plumbers need to get at pipes or cables in the future no need to rip up the floor above creaky creaky after theyv,e used a doubled up lollipop stick to secure the floorboard they sawed through between the joist. great hey. I expect some very positive answers to my ground breaking ideas:RpS_thumbsup:.
 
A lot of shxxe talked in this thread. Scary what strangers are putting into a customers head so he can fire it at some poor guy who's probably done a decent job. [re-skin a ceiling due to a crack? I hope the bonding agent used adheres 100% or there's an even bigger mess!!!]

I had the abve happen to me on a bedroom ceiling in my mothers a few months back. I re-skimmed an artexed ceiling, re-screwing the boards up again to make sure they were fixed and putting scrim over the rows of screw heads to try and prevent them or the nails popping or anything else nasty. It's an old house with joists about 1" thick (meant originally to take lath).

A day or two later I'm up there preparing to paint and I actually heard it go... I was in next bedroom and heard a loud crack, I went in to see what it was and didn't notice it. It was when I was giving the paint a second coat I noticed the ceiling cracked right across the centre of the room.

Cause: could it have been the weight of the paint? But I'd have thought the wet plater would have been heavier?

The under-lying cause: the edges of the boards weren't fixed to noggins.
 
Can and does happen, OP wouldn't see scrim if it's a hairline crack he would need to get a blade in to it and score it deeper to see the scrim. I don't think calling the guy out or saying he's ****** up is fair. had the OP said "plasterer boarded and skimmed ceiling, it's rough as **** and there's a crack down the middle" then fair enough. But a hairline crack can and does happen to us all so I'd give the benefit of the doubt with what we've been told so far.
 
Got to agree with John.. your still going to get a straight line however you board a ceiling, drying out too quick/movement will all cause a hairline crack, not the plasterers fault... of course he will have scrimmed it, were the sparkies banging about when the lights were fitted, as said, skim is very brittle and is 2-3mm... to say re skim it ?? whats the point, it will crack again if theres movement... cut out a ''v '' and fill with joint filler , its way more flexible and sand down... easy to blame the plasterer....

sending all the wrong signals to clients when there's a hairline crack and you (a plasterer) are calling for a full re-skim. Just think about that for a second..
 
if its boarded, scrimmed, skimmed properly, theres nothing a plasterer can do iof a crack appears.. its not his fault, also, laughing at someone saying ..about slab nails.. we used them for years with no problem, now there no good ?? get a grip... this customer must be lapping all the shite advice up, talk about turning on your fellow spread ....
 
Three days later it cracked... and can I borrow some filler ...pmsl....

mabye he should have borrowed some scrim first.:rolleyes)....
it might be drying to quick,or its the sparks fault? Or movement on the joists,or an earthquake caused it...lol...or mabye hes just arsed it?
No crack in the original ceiling...only after overboarding???.....
Who knows for sure .:rolleyes)......
 
I done a ceiling for a fella. Called round for a cup a few weeks later and noticed a hairline crack. Called round for tea a week after that and the hairline crack was gone. I asked him how he got to of it and he said he just painted it. Never seen it again. No problems.
 
i reckon he doesnt give a fu ck now it was soo long ago he could have had it reskimed 8 times buy now and all that extra weight pulled it all down but at least he knows if there was skrim or not now its all over the floor:rolleyes)

The plasterer has agreed to fix it, but what approach should we expect him to take?
1. Should he re-skim the whole ceiling?
Or
2. Should he cut back some of the skim, re-scrim the plasterboard and then reskim that section?
Or
3. Should he just use filler?

he may have made a cut in the board and didnt scrim it or didnt scrim the joint either way ask him skim crack and reskim whole ceilin its only way fiiling is waste of time

i very much doubt it mate... in fact, all you mugs slagging this plasterer who you never met, wouldnt last two mins with scaffs.... they wouldnt be falling over their arse to slag someone off...
