think it's just where it's mined, loren. impurities in the gypsum. but don't quote me on that. we used to get grey bonding in this neck of the woods. but for the past few years it's been pink. things were simpler when it was grey. now i have to explain to customers sometimes that the bonding i've thrown on is not the finish coat and not to worry etc. knauf plasters are more what you're used to. like an off white alabaster
Yeah I had Googled it up as I was wondering and I couldn't find anything on the subject. We refer to the leveling coat on most plasters and stucco's as a "brown coat" although it isn't (here), it's either gray stucco or white plaster unless you add color to it.

I'm wondering , as we use different materials over here in the western part of the US, all the gypsums and lime products we use are a white color and set & dry that way. Almost all the pictures of work in the UK your plaster products all seem to be a brown tone, anybody know why the difference?

Not totally sure why tbh but all or most of our gypsum products are either grey, pink'ish or brown'ish. There are some gypsum finishing plasters that are white but generally they are used to a lesser extent due to availability. British Gypsum have the majority share of the market here in the uk and their products are very easily available and it is generally their products you see in the photo's.

All the white British Gypsum plasters are Plaster of Paris (used in cornice and lime work). All the Gypsum plasters are coloured ie pink / grey dependent on where they are mined in the UK(Solid on brickwork/board etc)

It's interesting how you have 'British Gypsum' and we have 'USG' that also has the majority share of the market, I'll bet they're owned by the same people.

Would be much easier to run the cornice on beach and sure Mike would agree. As easier to mitre and stopping up - for run insitu - best use lime putty with casting plaster
I use 1/4 guaging plaster, 1/4 casting plaster, and 1/2 lime putty.

nice one -- plastercraft Dundee:RpS_thumbsup:

did you mix lime putty in with the plaster for running

its only little @jesssop so proberly not but saying that its very stretchy so mabey just keep stuffing things in till he says to stop
