I've seen this term used a lot on this forum was just wondering how long people think you have to be in the game before you can call yourself a time served spread

depends who you ask. I would say 3-5 years to be a plasterer and 5-8 years to call yourself a spread :RpS_wink:

I thought a courser was somebody who hunted rabbits etc with a Lurcher / sighthound !??? :RpS_confused:

I've just finished 5 years with two spreads. I'd say I've starved a good apprenticeship but I'm still learning really.

27 years off and on.
Now it's just jobs on the side so does that make me a chancer?
Never did apprenticeship, just picked up a trowel working with plasterer on Seddons and sort of stuck with it.

No mate I'd say your time served.
The term courser or chancer is used for lads who've gone on a short course to learn skimming and d&d for the sole purpose of setting themselves up as pro-plasterers and then going around practicing whilst getting paid in domestic property's, they have also destroyed any chance of professional spreads getting decent money on domestics because they work for peanuts.

Been doing this 4 ish years. def don't think of myself as time served and doubt I'll think that next year or the one after. there's just too much to learn and improve upon all the time. Maybe if i make it to 10years I might count myself in that catagory. Would love to have worked under a proper spread but no-one wanted me. meh

Errr careful with your words Jess "love to have worked UNDER a proper spread!" I feel a tidal wave of offers coming on!! :RpS_w00t:

Pah! My Fella is in the kitchen cooking my tea (damn right) and keeps sticking his head round the door saying 'are you on that bloody forum?!'

All I need now is to grow a penis and I will have become exactly the same as most of you on here! :RpS_lol:

I had a time served guy with me a month or so ago, I had to got back to the job a week after and spend the evening with a bag of velvet and a roll of sandpaper (on the gear he did).....teach me to keep an eye on em in future.

i started with my old man, 20 yrs ago when I was a nipper. Gave it up when I left college and took it up again this year.... But kept my arm in over the years. I've done the courses cus I thought it'd help and the paperwork (what a waste of my life that was, but if I was starting from scratch, most if it would have been a good baseline to start from).

I know my limits, 'coursers' don't. I think that's the difference between a good plasterer and a 'courser'.

If you can do a good job, you should not be judged on how many years you've got under your belt or how you reached that standard......

Quality of work and time in trade is not always a linear relationship.!

Least I hope I am cause that's a description of The Wife.:RpS_laugh:

I don't believe there is a real answer for this, what someone can learn in a day may take another a week. I think that how good you really are will reflect on your earning potential. If your good your likely to get hired again and if your rubbish then you won't.

I think its more a case of being able to get out the van and not being fazed or surprise by anything, which may be waiting for you on site, and that really only comes with experience (and a few balls ups along the way).
If you have the skill sets to overcome most things with little or no drama then your somewhere near.

I got most of the lads on here through there anal unit within a few days in the happy section..........................:RpS_thumbup:

Plastering is so anal

Yeah your right there, I guess getting a nice finish is the easy part. How long have you been at it?
