Thanks everyone for your help..... I can understand why some of you are peed off with people thinkin they can learn a trade within a short course- understandable. I am doing it for my own benefit not to try and hack any one off, or undercut people, I simply wanna learn the basics and this seems like a good way to do it ( especially as i have no plasterer contacts who can help out ) not out to make a career of it - if it happens , it happens , but i cant see my self how a short course can teach me the trade that you guys have took years learning. like i said just wanna learn basics.

so you learn the basics, even if you learn to over skim your own walls for your own benefit. it still takes a job away from a plasterer.

Or saves you a few quid and stops you being ripped off of someone else who has been on a course, go for it and if you need any advise ie how much to charge come on here someone will tell you :)

I'm the same as Danny, I was in the trade anyway doing roofing and as part of the job i ended up skimming ceilings and after velux had been fitted and found i was quite good at rendering and floating aswell. I did a course to build up confidence on bigger jobs and to make sure i ws doing it right. The course i did really helped and when i changed jobs working as a Council builder i got my nvq's through osat training and I'm plastering day in day out now to a high standard.

I really believe you've got to be practically minded and around the trade a long time to make it though, if your a warehouseman who's never even been on a site i wouldn't waste your money. The standard of some of the lads on the courses after three weeks was awful!

By all means waste your money on a course it will teach u the basics but you need to go out in the real world and help out some real spreads. If you need to i will help you if you hand me the money. ;D ;D

yeah and we dont like that :'( try labouring first honest afterv looking after a couple of spreads for a week or 2 u will soon wanna b a sparky or a kitchen fitter ::)

thanks for more input! i would do some labouring to gain experience, i have been on lots of sites for past 7 yrs doing other work so not comin from a back ground where have no idea of site work.

I'mworking as a general labourer now, trouble is no fecker wants you to learn the trade really, think they think youre gona take the work off um..... ???

go to college ...................jesus its a job youre lucky to pick it up in the first place let alone be taught .........its the plasterers job to earn his family money not look after some 17 year old gob shite you make youre own luck

i think we should be encouraging some of these guys at least they are willing to learn instead of scrounging

these days you cannot get an apprenticeship so the only route for basics is though a course we should not be knocking these guys down before they have started everyone has to learn somewhere with me it was knocking up for two lunatics each to there own i say kids aint got a chance these days

i know times are hard but after a recession there is always a boom, it might not be for a few years yet but the amount of social housing alone that needs to be built will keep us all busy for years and when this boom happens these ''Coursers'' will be needed and might have gained enough experience to share some of the gravy!!!

thanks for all your help! a lot of french comments which have been very helpful, for a fresh starter.
I am based in stafford and will spend bout a grand max on courses, has anybody got any SENSIBLE suggestions??

Get yourself on the dole then get the new deal grant you will get 500 towards tools 500 towards courses and another 60 a week towards wages if someone will take you on i sent my son on a 4 day course so he could learn the basics as i didnt have time to teach him as to busy making dosh anyway he did the course and it did what it said he can use a handboard and trowel and do small skimming jobs

courses are a waste of money .......you can learn just by watching in two days on site if youre in the right place at the right time .......then what do you do after the course?.........earn 30 quid a day mixing up , oh but i know how to skim..............no you f**k**g dont youve done it for a week and if i let you ill get kicked off site
you simply cant teach what takes a couple of years in a couple of weeks

what if a lad does a course and cant get on site ???..........gets all exited starts advertising and goes and fucks peoples houses up

unfortunately it doesnt happen overnight its something you need to learn ???..................sorry might be wrong here ???...................if you cant get a job with someone wait till you can or youll be sat on youre hands moaning saying the worlds being horrible to you

nobodies arguing with ya mate, Your right there is no way you can be skilled in one or two weeks but the courses should be seen as a foundation course to see if you like the job and if you've got what it takes to be any good.

After a course get as much experience as they can doing there own house, labouring or jobs for family and friend!
