Death of a true legend.

I'd heard he'd fell ill on wed/Thursday he's done so well to keep going thru out his life with his illnesses ,
What friggin legend - awesome boxer :boxeador:

Since i was a kid it was my goal to meet him. Heard he may have been getting a knighthood this summer and was planning on going down on the off chance. Ill have to make do with this beauty. Mrs asked me last night how much it'd cost to take it off my hands. Honestly couldn't pick a number. Itd have to be life changing

He visited Newcastle in the late 80's or early 90's and a lad i know was part of his security team he still has a 4ft x 3ft copy of the photo of him escorting Ali into a venue above his fireplace. His wife has been told on more than one occasion she would be gone long before the the photo ever would.

And at 10 years old in the days long long before satellite telly I stayed up all night with me fatha so we could listen to the fight on the radio.

Just reading he came to cov in the 70s and again in the 80s. Id say he was my all time hero wasted his prime years because he believed in something when it would have been easier to just roll over

He was never the greatest though, the current best of all time for me is Lennox Lewis ( beat every man he ever fought ) only one other heavyweight champion can say the same.

Of course he was the greatest. What he did for the sport and the people. The entertainment he provided. No one comes close. Marciano may have had a perfect 49-0 but how many people especially the younger generation have heard of him?

And surely if you're going on records Mayweather has to be up there. It's about more than records

Lennox Lewis was a great fighter, Ali was the greatest.
Records, stats etc not worth the paper they are written on, last David Haye opponent a good example, was it 29-0 before that fight?? And in world terms was an absolute chump.
You have to look at the quality of opponent, which brings me back to Lewis;
Look at the fighters he fought throughout his career, then take a look at Ali's, he was the best around in an era of quality that the division hasn't seen since, and highly unlikely ever will again.

I wasn't a fan of his antics ( not that I was around then ) was he not disrespecting all his opponents?? Wasn't there something dodgy about the Henry cooper fight

OK not guna go down well but here goes....

Converted to Muslim...refused to fight for his country in Viet nam...

Cockey gobshite to me...much prefer and respect the more humble sportsman...

Lol [emoji23][emoji23]
He did right to refuse to fight, how was it 'his' country when he couldn't even sit and have something to eat in a restaurant in the town he was reared in? Worth fighting for?
And that was after winning the USA a gold medal !

Ray Robinson for me.
Not a bad shout. again though, better record no doubt. Better fighter entertainer etc. Ali for me. He did things thatd never been seen before. All the poems and stating the rounds. It caught people's attention. A real one off character

Spot on mate.
Think he said something like "no Vietnamese ever called me ******"

Angelo dundee apparently opened up a small rip in alis gloves to allow him some recovery time whilst they were changed but even cooper himself said it only gave him about 5 seconds as they weren't changed.

Was showboating against cooper and got caught.
Came out next round and straightened the job out though.
I particularly like the footage of him finishing Brian London, his hand speed is jawdropping.

there was a computer generated fight between Marciano and clay, they cut all of their punches , with both boxers being defeated and both winning, it was shown on prime time tv, if i remember correctly rocky won with a knock out.

in the 60s boxing as a sport was going down hill, becoming a third rate sport then along came clay, boxing became interesting again, it was one of them times when along came several boxers who were, the best the world had seen, frazier, holmes, foreman, spinks.

Never knew that malc. I would have liked to see them fight, both in their prime. Who knows what would have happened.

brian london got his purse stopped for that fight as he was not a suitable opponent.

All the computers can be programmed and all the stats can be put together but anything could happen on the night.

The more I see of his fighting days the more I think what an arrogant cock he was.

clay at his prime fought every month, he gave every boxer a chance. before him chas. liston would only once or twice a year if he could find an opponent. no white fighter would fight liston .

Thats why the likes of ali, robinson, la motta can't be compared to today's fighters. They were fighting every month or so. 15 rounders and at times still having full time jobs

Anyone watching this on bbc1? A shame he went on so long.
Doctor said he couldn't touch his nose with his index finger before he fought Larry Holmes
