d*m**o there are hundreds and hundreds of render brand names out there but you can count the aggregate plants on your fingers

what does that tell you

Even less quarries and natural seams, all the white gypsum is imported for boards adhesive and other products, I was taught that only BG mined pink gypsum and that its pink because of shrimp deposits, is that true?, o wise one's

Dont tell him fellow BG Freemasons, it's our secret. We can't tell you unless Danny brings you down the mines and then buys you curry, puts you up in an hotel for two nights while forcing beer down your throat :flapper:

(erm, I'm not British by the way but I know me way around Loughborough )

No mention of shrimp deposits when we were at BG the other week, although in amongst the gypsum is what they referred to as mud rock, which they said is essential for workability. The gypsum must make up close to 80% of the seam for it to be used. I'm pretty sure they said that the colour of the plaster depended on the colour of the actual gypsum being mined, which is why some of BGs plants produce pink plaster and others produce grey gear.

Its Marl that gives the plaster the pink colour.
Marl is a natural impurity in the rock.
And it also gives workability to the plaster.

Gypsum rock was formed when the sea water evaporated millions of years ago, (so there might be the odd shrimp in there :RpS_wink: ) which was then hidden in the earths crust, until it was bought close to the earths surface during the last ice age.
It is now about 300feet below ground.

The grey plaster is mined in the north & pink plaster in the south, but it gets delivered all over the Uk and even to Poland we were told.

Lee you clever chap you've given a much more scientifically accurate answer than that BG guy gave us, mind you he probably took one look at us lot and thought "keep it basic".

Is there any chance of the gypsum rock running out? Then we'll all have to resort to rendering and put warrior n owls out of business!

Me & Andy should be ok though we've got a few supplies in stock :RpS_biggrin:

Considering that bit of rock I took looked like a turd it cleaned up real nice and makes a nice paperweight, well until the shortage kicks in and then it'll go for auction. Just think BG and Knauf locked in a bidding war over my bit of rock.

some gypsum mines have ran out before and caused delivery hold ups they find additives and new mines all the while i suspect. the recession has back logged alot of production also so think it will be a while before you can use this excuse for a day off

cant remember who told me now, but the solution to gypsum mines running out is that a bi product of, and heres the part i cant remember, a factory of some sort anyway, is gypsum.

How many mines are there left in the uk then? Are we talking a handful or quite a few? I always remember my old boss telling me about a shortage in the 80s. Apparently he had blokes phoning up asking if he wanted to sell them his materials lol

There was a shortage a few years ago, caused I think by kilns out use for maintenance work, non of the merchants round us had any finish, think it was in the 90's tho not the 80's

The shortages were caused by strikes not a lack of gypsum. The mine we went down went for miles and miles, in fact they talk of the different districts of the mine.

It was massive we drove for at least 5-10 minutes underground just to get to where they were cutting the rock.
They even have their own petrol station under there ffs :-0
That bloke who drove us around the mine said he was one of the ones on strike :RpS_sneaky:

By the way that rock in the pic above ^^ is 180million years old :-0
