if i use screeds (plaster 'battens') i put them on vertical, fill em in from the top down, that way your always ruling upwards, compacting the render and encouraging it to stay on the wall...

alright m8 not using wooden battens just meant making battens out of sand and cement...checking they are level and then filling in the middle...thats how i was taught but on a smaller wall than this small horizontal line of sand and cement at top one at bottom check both are level with each other then fill gap and rule off shounld all be flat providing top and bottom are level with each other.
But this is a much biger wall going to have to do it in sections...i know some people do vertical battens others go horizontally.

lol, thats what i was refering to... as in 'plaster' battens... battens made of plaster
same again for ruling upwards...
