I went employed when the recession hit in 2008. Only lasted 3 months and hated every minute. They were a corner cutting dodgy company and I couldn't live with the stuff they were asking me to leave so I left.

Funny thing is they are still keeping up their usual practices and the company are doing really well! Takes the piss.

Employed. Although I have always been so don't know the difference really. Money on the bank guaranteed every week. Holiday pay, sick pay, van provided so free travel to and from work, and if it all goes tits up I'll be made redundant. I can't lose.

Only down fall for me is I make about 2/3 rds the going day rate. However if there's no work about my gaffer is contracted to pay me regardless.
Similar situation for me carlos, until just over 2 years ago now.
quite happy working for my old boss,as you said money in the bank, van etc....
26 years ffs I knew the place inside out ...he knew me inside out too, somtimes loved it,somtimes hated it..we used to argue like fuckk at times.lol but never really had the urge to leave and go on my own tbh.
but alas he decided his time was up,folded the company gave us all our notice...and two weeks later I had my redundancy, bought a van from him( at a good price) and after much encouragement and advice from some tpf members I was gone, Out on my own....:frenetico:....tis good now tho...still much the same ...somtimes hate it and somtimes love it....lol
i think for me i enjoy the flexability now ......but it was easier on the mind and body being employed cause he took the hassle ...but also the big coinage;)

Or drink yourself to an early grave ?? :birra:

The worst thing about being self employed is getting your money off w**k*r builders.

Don't work for the c**ts. I only work for one builder. Worked Thursday friday for them. Im with them for the next two weeks to but friday 3pm he comes in and says im off now. Ill settle up these two days so we're all square. Paid me there and then. Next Friday will be the same.

I don't work for c**ts either. You f**k**g know on meeting someone if they're going to be a t**t with your money. If you aren't sure, it only takes a couple of phone calls to find out.

Last one I worked for in Bury .... promised me the earth to get me there because he was behind on a job .. ' yes i'll pay you Friday ' .... Thursday I ask 'you ok to weigh me in tomorrow' .... Friday arrives ... Lunch time ' Have you got my money '.............' theres a problem about that '.....

I walked off and started putting my gear in the van - said pay me the half day and forget the rest .... he went to the bank there and then for me .... wont be working for him again as he proved what a c**t he is .

One chance with me and after that your added to the ignore list ....

Only cis, which to me is almost the same as being employed.

Is it bollox

You can work for who you want when you want, that's self employed.

Your opinion is that your only self employed if you receive gross pay? Comedy gold.

Comedy gold lol

Under cis you are having your tax deducted at source, you are still working for a firm who tell you how much you will be paid, who can also fire you whenever they please, they tell you what to do and when to do it etc etc.

Cis yes you are classed as self employed but it's just because building firms could not survive under current employment laws

@gps. In reply to your last statement, which I can't quote because you wrote it inside the other quote, only if you allow it to be that way. If you were labour only, working for the same company regularly, on whatever rates they set, then you are almost employed, and HMRC would indeed prefer that you were.
If like me, and a fair number of other bonafide sub contractors, you tell the contractor what your services are going to cost and when you expect to be paid, that's a different story.

I didn't mean to do it that way, and yes I agree with you

I don't know about the UK but in Ireland I see lads who are working for a set wage with builders or sub contractors but are classed as self employed. The s..t really hit the fan when the bubble burst and the country was practically bankrupt.Lads some who were labourers could'nt get any benefits because they were "self employed businessmen".I work for myself because I choose to,I like what I do and put in the hours to make what I can.I also respect those on a set wage because both the self employed and the employed need each other.

I'm glad you agreed with Tony!!

I know where you are coming from re. Current employment laws etc.
Mine is deducted at source, through choice, I price work & tender for jobs?
If you are working for someone, as you say, that tells you what to do & where to do it, and you don't agree or want to do it, then you go work somewhere else.

This is being self employed, a term that has nothing whatsoever to do with where tax is deducted.
