I thought it was time to register, seeing as I keep getting pop ups telling me I can't nose at any more posts until I register.

I'm Bel, I've come into this fools' game late in life. Working across the UK, specialising in repairs to traditional buildings using hot lime mortars and plasters. I've been doing it fairly low- key for about 6 years but decided to give up the office job a few years ago to spend my time getting covered in crap and burning myself. Loving every minute, except the days off, because that's when every b@stard muscle in my body hurts.

Welcome along @Bella83

I’m currently booked in for a lime course as I’m wanting to direct my company in this field! Can you give some insight to your experience so far?

Welcome aboard Bella, since you've been lurking around you know what this forum is like and I'm sure you can hold your own, Jess certainly can!

hi oli - I,m doing fine considering -i,m still living the dream :inocente:

hows you ----- read your earlier input about you still cranking :reloco:
are you still keeping busy - plastering not cranking
I'm very well thank you all things considered, my plastering to cranking ratio is about 70-30 which in hill gradient terms is about 1:20
So tough on the calves ..
Hope your smiling sir :D

Where are you booked on? I think I'm lucky as it's what I've started with, although going from a day skimming to a day hotmixing hemp and chucking it on walls is a bit of a wake up call to the arms- they've got lazy!

I tend to do quite a lot of external work- repointing, shelter coats and the like. I think time is the biggest thing to be aware of, especially with hot and putty lime work. It's not like skimming where you know roughly how long something will take to pick up etc. It can be weather dependent and humidity etc., wall moisture- all of it makes a difference. A couple of days' lime course is great for an introduction, but I would say that it you want to offer it as a service, you ideally want to do the L3 NVQ in heritage plastering. It will put you in a much better position to identify problems, solve them, specify for jobs etc. which in turn will lead to a better result and more word of mouth recommendations. At the least, I'd seek out an experienced lime plasterer relatively local to you and see if you can hop on with them for a job or two.

Enjoy it though- every day is different!
