New to this forum so firstly, hi to all.

I have to render outside walls (timber / osb)on a loft conversion (mine). Price is a big issue so intend to do work myself.

2 routes: battens + eml + s / c with marble dust in float coat.
or
board + base coat of a render system + stain and buggering about.

1 wall will continue to interior and become part of bathroom / shower enclosure.

Worry is that I've never done either but am committed as BC approved spec for render. As name suggests, I'm an amateur and don't want to offend professionals but this is for my house so not taking business away. Had never plastered before either but was shown mix and spread by and old school builder friend and have achieved same effect (lighter) with gypsum on all other walls and ceilings. Technique's probably crap and am slow so have to use quite a wet mix for big areas but done about 250 sqm and so far no need to sand or fill - just floated etc then washed with pva / water stain mix and look like pale venetian. Now want to do the same but hard plaster (outside and shower) and dark but with the same polished cloudy look.

Just don't much like the render-system finishes and they seem pretty pricey.

Many thanks for any suggestions.

employ an experinced plasterer. plastering is a trade, that is something that you have to learn. it is not something that you catch like a dose of the pox.

Malc,
apologies if I've caused offense. But it is my house and I've had to learn pretty much everything to get it this far. My background is sculpture and cabinet-making. Anyway, riblath and my own mix is a lot cheaper than boards and proprietary rendercoats and my labour is free. The risk is mine as is the end result and if it's really ****, BC will make me do it again - by hiring one of you guys - and I'll accept defeat graciously because at least I tried. If you can help with some advice I'll send in pictures you can laugh at.

crack on. but i can not see how you can work cheaper then a plasterer, it will cost you money, the time that you spend trying to plaster , and purchase of the tools you need. the extra cost you will have to purchase the material.
i can purchase rib lath at £5 per sheet. i bet the merchants will tell you closer to £25 per sheet.
your own mix of materials would be completely untested.
you must be able to earn money at sculpture, cabinet-making i know that the better quality of woodwork usually the less money.
