The listing covers the whole of a house and its curtilage that is associated land and property. Every aspect of a house or building is covered. The issue is whether you need permission to carry out works. Works that effect the character of a building such as replacing lath and plaster with plasterboard probably need permission because it is a change of material and the bits replaced might contribute to the historic or architectural quality of the building.
Like for like repairs can be argued not to affect the character and therefore don't need listed building consent.
