granno

iv just been asked to price 850m of granno. iv briefly seen it done a while back but all i can remember is its was screeded like screed, then left to go off and trowel a couple of times extra.

can any1 give me a bit more of an idea how to do it, ie method and mix.

Make sure you have plenty of sand in it, its a f*cker to trowel when it is short on sand.

when i started i used to sometimes labour for the granno layer-i think it was a big mixer load to 50kg cement-the granite was 50/50 dust and 5mm(ish)chippings-it was a wet mix and it had to be down as quick as possible-often we would still be there when it got dark-it takes forever to trowel up.youngmans/planks where spanned across it for trowelling and he used to flick cement dust onto it to create fat for trowelling up-hope this is a bit of help-and its good for breaking in trowels!

Stay away from it, we did Heathrow terminal 3 back in the 80s, i was a labourer then, we used to drive from Bedford to Heathrow, start laying the stuff, and finish about 1, or 2 in the afternoon, then go home for a few hours, then about 6 or 7 at night go back to trowel it up...........foooooking nightmare !!

As del says it can be a nightmare to use has to down by 10 - 11 o clock in the morning , lay it as wet as possible float and trowel pm sometime ;D

wet. the excess water drains through into the semi dry mix and you can trowell sooner never trowell
with cement powder as it can cake and lift we charge approx 12 per metre lab. material prices
will vary up and down the uk. it could take 2-3 weeks to lay 850 metres. 3 to 1 total mix never put
more than 25 per cent sharp sand in mix

cheers mate. what is the mix again? do u need granite chippings and dust? where do u get the granite from? how long should it take to finish a days work doing it how u said? within 8-9 hours?
how do u finish it? is it screed and float it till flat, then let it go off, put boards down and start troweling it?

The mix ratio is 2.5 granno 6mm chippings to dust, 0.5 sharp sand, 1 cemment.Depending where you are in the U.k. we would purchase granno from Tarmac.We grout the day before,to get a little suction,we lay first 50mm semi dry,and levelled by shovel,approx;and then furthur top with 25mm, wet mix to datum.We lay about 15 to 20sq mtr of dry before we top coat with wet mix.Top coat is tamped like concrete and then we run the float over once,and then trowel up granno approx; 4 times depending on ambiant temperature, and also what time we can sart laying.If we started laying at 7am,we would lay until about 11am,which on a warm day you could be finished by 5pm, on a cold day maybe 7.30pm.We lay youngmans over the area by fixing 4 by 2 to the wall to get a long wall edge.We never walk on the floor until the next day,not even to trowel it.Bay sizes 4 by 4 m2 unless dictated by others I hope this answers all your queries

Chris you are right, we have in the past power floated with 24 inch electric mosqito trowel there are some draw backs,with power float, ie; you can't sit power float on surface until much later in the day., where as by hand you may be able to have trowelled it 2 to 3 times already, you still need to hand trowel around piers and in corners,but on large straight areas, then a power float would be suitable.
