@Lastlaff The sheet is a mystery, I think it came with the house. The dog is stalking me because I am late in feeding him and he'd much rather I got on with that than carried on f**k**g around with the wall.

Well distemper was still being used in the '60s, so it'd be worth checking to see if that is what's on the walls.

Don't think its distemper. Looks like a fairly modern property to me with the skirts and bannisters and if anyone had tried to paint plaster or paper it before now they would have known well before now.

The first bit's been answered, and paint or wallpaper adhesive will stick quite happily to distemper for years.
