Hi

I'm looking for help in deciding how best to prepare my back of garage wall for ultimately a pebble dash finish. I'm not a plasterer by trade, having only started last summer in my house doing internal multi finish walls. I'm only going to attempt the back end of the garage for now to see how good a finish i can achieve. The bricked up door has been done using aerated blocks. I'd read somewhere that pressure washing the bricks to get rid of loose/crumbling parts would be one way of doing it. The wall is in quite a bad state of repair. Any help kindly appreciated.

Looks like a lot of them bricks have blown taking the render with it..

firstly maybe get a pro at least that way you won't be redoing it over and over because you are inexperienced..

chip off any loose blown brick, rake out mortar joints and obviously hack off the old dash..

Best way about doing this job is removing all of the old plasterer, taking it back to the brick/block work, then scratch the whole wall again. Then next day come back and put your next render coat on and dash it. Maybe get another plasterer with you for advice.

Best way would be removing all the old render back to the brick/block work and make sure that the wall is clean. Scratch coat the whole wall again, come back the next day 2nd coat render and then dash. As its your first time might be best to have someone with a plastering background with you.

All the best..

Thanks for your comments, I may be able to get a hold of a mate of a mate who is a plasterer. I'm just looking at how to best prepare the wall so it could be scratch coated or as someone else suggested scudding?? How thick could the scratch coat be as there is quite a depth between broken bricks to flush.

Jeez ! What a mess,
Take off existing, give it a good clean,
dub out all the blown brick, sbr slurry , scratch coat with mesh( especially over that blocked up door) . leave for 4-5 days then top it and dash.
you may want to think about beads for corners etc.

Mix ratios and additives are closely guarded secrets..:RpS_wink:

Do yourself a favour tho and get a pro in.
You never know he might do you a deal with you and your neighbour .........., cause his looks fecked aswell ..:RpS_biggrin:

knock it down,,,loving the celcon blocks to fill in the door way, different strength to the rest of the building, hack it all off, scud every inch of it with sbr, scratch with five to one sand cement with water proofer with fibres and mesh in the first coat, definitely where the doorway was built up, keep it damp for a week, then second coat with 6/1/1 sand cement lime with handful fibres per guage, it can only look better..

move house keep expecting loads of immigrants to pop out of the photo where do you live belarus lol!

I think the main issue from day 1 with this garage is there was no gutter at the end, water still runs down the back end and I suspect that's why it's in the state it's in. I plan on fixing if up, installing a gutter and hopefully it will see me through for a few years. The guy up the street has his garage totally clad in PVC boards, expensive but hopefully won't need to go to those extremes!

@pitchshifter182 welcome to the forum :-) Looks like you got some great advice :-) We tend not to discuss prices on the forum as it always causes arguments :-) Also Get some quotes either form chaps on here or in your local area and also may be worth seeing some of their previous work just so you can see what to expect.

Good luck and make sure you post up some finished photos :-)

all the best

I've hacked off all the old crap, mixed and sbr slurry and applied it all over, looks better that it ever has done, I've meshed the blocks also, problem is the sbr slurry has dried, how do I best prepare the wall for the scratch coat,

It is prepared, scratch coat it now.

ok found some mix ratios, should i wet the sbr painted wall before i scratch as its bone dry.

Thanks

David

the SBR slurry will have killed a lot of the suction for S&C it need some suction otherwise it will slide all over...

you could sbr 50/50 with water if you feel it needs it..

pics to follow??

How many bags of dash do any of you think I will need to buy to cover this back wall? Also, I've had a look in b and q, but can't seem to find small spar stones, ideally white, ideas on places to buy in the Glasgow area?

thanks

david
