How I came to love the sponge.

Did you use a sponge or spongefloat?
I have two spongefloats, one is a finer grain and is a lot harder to drag over the wall.
Sponge float bud, tried two types but there only cheap ones, is there a certain type that is best?

Nah, if it's a coarse sponge it should be sound, just surprised to hear it was hard dragged over the wall, I don't keep it flat mind, I keep it on edge, trowel like

I only use the sponge when going over board. One trowel gets swapped for the sponge and 2 other trowels gets swapped for the s*p*r*lex.
I'm out now[emoji56]

No matter what yous say after going through a full apprenticeship and trade test then bringing through a couple of apprentices through 4 years .I would Never tell them to use a sponge nor would my old tradesman tell me to do it . The art of plastering is going to f**k 6 week course and c**ts out thinking they are the dogs balls . And now sponging it. f**k it next time I'll just toss a mix on and go back next day to sand it all down sounds good :wtf:

get with the program davie. if things didnt move on youd still be lathing and throwing horsehair in your mix. ill live by the sponge and ill die by the sponge. you seem to need the reassurance that its wrong without actually mastering it. youre in denial my friend

Actually sponged one wall today,
1st coat, DEEP!!!
2nd coat, deeper than it should preferably be to cover more discrepancys.
Left it longer than I would like as someone kept me on the phone,
Sponged then flattened,
1 s*p*r*lex.
To be honest I could have walked from it then, but being the particular sort I am I gave it a cross trowel of the flex.

I'll be one seriously pissed off man if i die with a trowel/sponge in my hand...that'd be a right kick in the teeth! I wanna go out with my 1200 speedskim in my hands! Or maybe balls deep in the wife either would do

I'm not saying any you guys just out college lol . I just mean in general that's what's happening . And as for the sponge I'm all for trying new ways of plastering . But as I says I would never teach an apprentice nor would I liked to have been showed that. Imo you learn from scratch not short cuts or easier ways of doing it . Like speedskim spat ect that's ok once you can actually coat and finish with trowel . Then learn new ways of working . I'm still learning now and I'm 15 years doing it now but I always like hearing and picking up new tips from other plasterers as everyone seems to do it different ways .

The Irish having been sponging for years ,lots of thick coats and more greasy finish I think, I rarely ever use a sponge, maybe the odd curve under bonding, I did a room yesterday over artex ceiling and painted walls and I wouldn't even think of using a sponge , I think for bigger hits it doesn't come into play at all as the plastering is been done as its meant to be done, timing is key ,people are trying to force it with speedskims, plastic trowels etc, ironically I believe if you wait longer for the first coat to pull in before applying the second you will finish faster over all. I have seen some terrible sponging but I'm sure lots can do it properly,
Amused again at the enthusiasm v the anger at it

Everyone calm down abit lol I agree about learning the old tekkers first then what ever from there but has no1 realised all these 'new' tools and methods are just adaptations of old. All the speedskims, big spats etc are like the old darbies but better, sponge float is similar to cross graining on serrafite (excuse the spellings) etc, angle tool is just like old twitchers? I'm only going off what one of my bosses tells me and he's from old school apprentice days but all makes sense? I know I'm gonna get shot to pieces here now but just have a think....

You should show him what you have written and he may go"mm mm not really"

Ok, why do you think he will? I was told darbies were used to flatten off same as the spats and speedskims, cross grain to bring it back? Angle tools and twitchers to fill up and bring in wet angles? Hey I'm only a messenger, put the guns down [emoji119]
