How to render over 20mm recesses.

Hi all,
I recently volunteered to help a friend out with some work in his garden. One of the jobs is rendering the retaining wall running around the perimiter. The only issue i think i may have is that the walling blocks have quite a peaked face and the pointing is fairly set back, which in places means that the scratch coat would need to 20-25mm think. Is this doable or is there a workaround?

Thing is i wouldnt reach the brick face with 10mm, would i need to go round filling the mortar lines first?

What material are you using?

Sharp sand and cement 4:1. Thinking of using sbr aswell but i see so many contradictions regarding its useage! One persons recommemdation is anothers avoid at all costs!
