Hi people. Any of ye got any ideas how to make skimcoat go off faster in this blasted weather. Iv heard that aluminite will help and iv also heard to add a bit of white cement to the mix. Only getting 2 hits a day and didnt price the job to "2hits a day". Money slipping away fast.

Creme de tartare off the shelf at supermarkets half a tub per bag should shave 20 mins off the set

Have a dig round on previous threads solway its been covered loads marra........oh and good luck with the creme of tartar...........:RpS_thumbsup::RpS_unsure:

Stay a bit later and get the 3rd gauge on , simple

i only want to do two hits any day. after that i am peed off and ready to go home usually about 3 o clock

just like jr said put bigger sets on. The best thing I bought a few years ago was a space heater (Big gas blower) usually buy 2 or 3 gas bottles through the winter (often get 1 or 2 purchased by client) turn it on full blast for 10-20 mins in the morning then leave it on low for a few hours, heats a house up really quick. This time last year we did a large barn conversion in the south hams (devon) thermometer was showing -1 outiside and -4 inside ( no windows or doors in, nightmare) hung dust-sheets over the openings, got the gas blower on the go, had no problems.

Same in a barn conversion we did, in our bait room we put Kingspan over the window and wedged a sheet of Kingspan over the door - had our calor gas fire going and toasted our sandwiches in front of it. Funny really, the smell of toast in cold weather has a real drawing effect. :RpS_laugh:

thats the only downside to using a space heater on site, come 10am every f*ckr on site is in your area :RpS_cursing:

we had one of them heaters that glows red on a job a few years ago you know the hire ones that say dont touch heats from 0 to 200 degrees in 5 seconds, we used to get to work early with a bag full of eggs bacon sausages mushrooms then lot lay the heater down and make a fry up before work, it was a touch that all th frying pan and plates and that were there too (kitchen extension everything was goin)

Same as flynny, keep the water from washing out your set bucket and drill each day ,keep the dirty water about a day old , give it a quick stir with your mixer and add it to a clean set bucket 50-50 dirty water and clean , that will speed your setting time up , you will get use to it , imo tho getting better prices and not having to do 3 moves a day is a better option .

Use out of date skim, trowel up in 10 mins :RpS_thumbup:

Did some patching once with some real out of date stuff, mixed it in a black bucket and the bloody stuff set before I could use it :RpS_laugh:

I always save a couple of bags of bonding & multi so they go outta date, ideal for patching. :RpS_thumbup:
But you gotta be quick lol.

Just do 2 bigger sets, you can get an extra bag to bag and half on no probs in this weather, thats an extra 2-3 bags which makes up for your 3rd set. youll still be stood about waitin.

Seems like U do little tiny G** sets and lose money. Do all awkward bits first in a big set then U won't be waiting round for next set or trowel up earlyer then put next set on and final trowel the 1st? Or just man up and put 2 bucket hits on :-]

Ive found the bin heaters **** up the set! Even if you use them for a few mins to bring temp up then turn them off! made the hit go off in patches. 6 of us did a house last year and ended up not using the heater in the end.I hate this job in winter!
