Hello. I have a lime plastering question. We are plastering the interior of a random rubble stone cottage with Singleton Birch NHL3.5.

There are problems with water ingress which we are attending to by re-pointing the exterior.

Would it compromise the performance to add a standard mortar plasticiser (similar to Febmix)

thanks
Ian

I can see why you may want to add the plasticiser as adding water to make the mix easier to use may weaken it. The only thing i can think against adding it would be a possible chemical reaction with the lime or maybe staining of the finished look. Pozolan is a natural cement which can be added to the mix so maybe other than lime itself as a plasterciser there may be a natural liquid additive.

Are you knocking up the gear for pointing by hand or in a mixer ? you will get better workability easier by using a mixer so, if using a mixer when you think the gear is mixed and ready just leave it a little longer say anywhere up to 5 mins or so any it will improve the workability but do not let it over mix. I have never added anything to lime motors for pointing as the lime should plasticise it plenty especially on a 2-5 mix.

The gear will feel and spread like dog log.
I find a lime putty type is nicer to use.ive been using baumits bagged lime render.lovely gear to use

Thanks for all the advice

Thanks for all the advice.
We are mixing with a standard Belle mixer. The mix is fine if left long enough. Problem is that we have an hour's travel each way to the job. By the time we get a mix on and leave it long enough to fatten up we are only getting a few mixes before we have to clean up to leave. The job is taking forever and we are losing money in the process. The lads on site have asked if they can add a bit of Feb to speed things along a bit. I did not want to give them a go-ahead without getting a bit of feedback as I don't want to compromise the performance in relation to water ingress.
