internal damp patch

are we saying there is no other sign of condensation elsewhere in this room and that patch is the only area?

From memory there is one other patch at same level about 30cm from this one just aboove skirt board
No other forms or evidence of damp
My Mrs reckons its like a sauna in the kitchen when her mum has all the pans boiling on the cooker

Can you post up a pic of the area.any salts on the patch. Maybe prize a bit of skirting off and see if the woods damp. Is it an external wall. Is the ground higher outside.

there is a pic on the fisrt post
internal wall between kitchen and living room
yes white salty effervessence on patch

What's the otherside of the wall like. Take skirting off hack off back to brick 1 metre. Drill inject lowest course . Funds permitting. Sand cement & sika waterproofer + splash of sbr .scratch coat. Cut inch of render of bottom. Skim. Worst scenario.

another good possible.. im not buying condensation with salt and no other evidence of it... soz bubbles but id expect it to be all over the place... especially on the external walls and more than likely than on an internal wall...
im wondering if theres a slight dip in the tiles just there... water will condense on the tiles too....
chimneys a goodun though...

Aye.......chimney's something I never thought of - good shout flynny:RpS_thumbup:

But when you're told that it's a kitchen the old auto-pilot kicks in to ''it's got to be condensation''...............at one stage i thought it was the dog p*ssing on the wall:RpS_laugh:
So many variables, but I'll stick with condensation for now:RpS_wink:

well i thought condensation at first cos its usually the cause.. but then i remembered the salts.. which you dont USUALLY get unless its real bad and been a problem for a while but then theres no other sign of it anywhere only this little bit...
so im having 'picked up off the tiles under the skirting sort of thing' or ill back the chimney idea if there is one...
dog was looking favourite...
also no dog does include 'no cat, rabbit or other medium sized animal likely to p'ss in the same spot over and over again' doesnt it?
and please tell me there aint a bathroom or bog the other side of that wall...

you watch it be 'rising damp'.... flynny'll go apesh't... :RpS_laugh:

just wondering if its a vented heating system and the pipes run along that wall and theyre buried in the screed and they aint sheathed over...
tiles wont give the game away if thats the case...

Great thread some really good stuff.

Right there are no other "animals" in the house. No bathroom on the other side or chimney breast. Its just a living room wall on the other side.

I think just take of the skirts first and see if its damp and render goes to the floor would be a start.

And to clarify when i say salt on the wall its like a white powdery residue when u rub with your hands. Is that salt?

Dab a bit on your tongue.
Is there a window above it ? does that crack on the wall sound loose? And like whats been mentioned what was against the wall in the first place coz its left a dark mark on the wall?

it could just be powdery plaster thats gotten wet, dried out, gotten wet, dried out etc etc....
its possible to get salts from condensation but its gotta be really bad and have soaked right the way into the substrate, then been drawn back out again bringing the salt with it...
but if its white white... its prolly salt... do what flyny says... lick the wall...

wonder if its an old patch? rest of the wall browning, and this bit sand and cement patched up? the difference in density would pull a bit of moisture out of the air, the denser the substrate, the greater its ability to conduct heat, and therefore a colder surface to the touch...

getting interesting now :RpS_biggrin:, can you scrape all the shitty stuff off back to the base coat and take another pic , let us see whats there

ay flynny, were getting awful close to eliminating all other possibilities here... better get the humble pie out the freezer just in case mate!! :RpS_laugh:

what if, there was a wall there before, its been ripped out, it was on a footing and theyve bodged it where it toothed into the wall with the damp on?

or who ever lives there cnt be arsed to go to the toilet and just pisses up the wall, just watch mention it to them that it could be a animal pissing up the wall (play ignorant that you know there aint any animals) and watch the old man get nervous and twitchy.........you know why..........hes haveing a jimmy up the wall every day:RpS_thumbup:

How do we know if the tiles have just been laid over a old floor with no plastic membrane have I spelt it right LOL.

prolly be more evidence henry but yeh, possible, how olds the house?...

the plasterers forum 'think tank' damp diagnostic section.... 20 quid a month.... :RpS_laugh:
