Just as title says, is it possible to float over an external steel lintel. Building a stone gable at moment and clients wanting reveals around the window and a band down sides of corners. There's a steel beam going in to hold stone up but TBH, I've never plastered S&C over a steel lintel outside. Only ever covered steel beams inside but never a steel lintel externally.

Asked the client to phone their engineer to see if it's OK to change to concrete lintels but if it's not possible, is there a way to float over the steel lintel. I'm thinking maybe use cement backer board but how would I get it to stay up. Can't see shooting hiltis though the backer board TBH or maybe I'm.wrong. any suggestions.
 
Fix some timber soldiers between the steel if it's an I type or sometimes called H type and fix the boards to that.

It ain't a rsj, it's like aa an upside down T where stone fits into both sides and the flat part can be seen. This is right where the reveal will be
 
Fix timbers to the face then over hang the board fixing a timber to the back of the over hang, then fix boards to the reveals or have a look at dry lining fixings for steel there are some clip on fixings.
 
Will a bead fixed to the corner nearly cover the reveal? If so or it's a bit wider flatten a bead out with a hammer and slot that into the reveal held under by the corner bead.
 
Wrap eml around it. Some pics would be handy to get the jist of what your saying

It'll be 3-4 inch plate reveals. It's the underside I'm wanting to float.

Sorry big k, been up from 4.50 this morning and 3 hour round trip to work so getting my band reveals mixed up with my plate reveals.

What are you going over on the face of the wall? The stone? So your bands are proud of the stone??

Yeah they'll be proud of the face of stone but underneath on top part, it might be steel lintel. Need to know can I float it somehow because have never preped for floating over a steel lintel.

Working in galwaygalway. Rents as dear as f**k so 3 of us wack in diesel, 20 euro gets us up and down.
 
You need metal around it somehow, if you can trap it over the top of window frame and then bend it around and fix it on the face somehow.

Was thinking maybe Hardie board. Was there anything that sticks it to steel and holds forever?
 
Or tell them not to be tight coonts and get some granite pillars around it

Lol.
Their budget is tight alougth they were considering quartzite heads but it's going to take 3 week for them.

I've suggested 4 concrete pre stressed lintels, 2 on top of 2 alougth I've asked them to ask they're engineer first. I've floated over concrete heads in stonework before but it was only 1m of stone above them. This is about 2m or more so want the engineer to OK it first but heard he's a fussy fcuker and mightn't go with the Concrete heads.
 
Shot fire eml to the steel?
It won't move anywhere and after letting the scratch coat dry it shouldn't move about when working on it either. We've had to do it on internals when floating around steels.

Look neighbour just fix boards with an adesive . Like pink grip or stronger. Marine ply cwment board watever n mess ply or coat cement board. Why complicate things
 
Gripfill eml all round rsj but leave a gap over window to stop damp bridging top and sides of window. Make the eml "L" shape if that makes sense, with a fixing onto masonry. When the scratch sets you've got a rigid fixing, the Gripfill on the flat steel and mechanical fixing onto masonry

I used concrete heads on the gable I was talking about but will need to do something with the peaked lintel on other gable(pics tomorrow)

Will the gipfill keep its bond externally once the reveal gets wet in winter with rain.
I'm thinking maybe shotfire the expanded metal onto the underside along with some gripfill. Maybe abit of overkill but worth a go. I've kept the lintel back near an inch so plenty room for scratch coat and final coat.

Don't know what you mean about leave gap?
