Is my plasterer doing this job correctly?

Hi all,

Theres a wall in my house that became damaged from damp last year, the wall is flaking in areas, rust along the edges/corners and theres one area where the plaster is coming off from the wall. I have a plasterer in currently to fix it up but I feel like hes maybe cutting corners? I would have thought he would remove all the plaster, steel beads, etc. Replace the plasterboards as it would have been soaked through with the damp. Then re plaster etc. But hes just PVAd over the existing wall, placed new steel beads on top of the old ones and now plastering over the existing wall. I have asked him about it and he says its the best way to fix it. But I would have thought leaving the old rusty beads and water damaged plaster on the wall would just cause problems in the future? Like rust stains coming through, etc.

Thoughts?
 
Proof is in the pudding see what it looks like after next winter.
is water ingress sorted first anyway?
You expected one thing but should’ve asked for that to be done instead of assuming that would be done maybe? Maybe miscommunication? Did you ask for the wall to be plastered? It’s your house so you decide what happens to it but the method what you want costs more obvs than what he/Jess is doing….

That’s like me telling my mechanic that I want the oil
Pump changed when I haven’t got a clue what it is ! The house owner needs to be guided by the so called professional

I know
that wasn’t what I meant
im saying if against pro advise you want something a certain way to make you happy you can pay for it to be done that way and waste your cash
and don’t think someone is charging price for a hack off and float and set but only scimming over a wall for a quick cheeky buck if you only asked for it to be plastered

it seemed to me here customer was expecting hack off but asked for it to be plastered

I posted the ad on MyBuilder looking for someone to come and repair the wall. I explained to this guy that there was a leak in the roof (Which has since been fixed). I have no knowledge regarding plastering or what the best fix is for the issue I had. The issue was that water came in and soaked the wall and rusted the metal in the wall (I'm assuming the steel bead that runs along the edge, resulting in rust coming through the paint). I sent the plasterer pictures and he said he will advise on replacing any damaged plasterboard, replacing the steel beads, and plastering. So I booked him in. But once he started work, I noticed he wasn't replacing the plasterboard and instead applied what I assume was PVA over the wall, stuck on new steel beads over the top then plastered over it (Or Skimmed? I'm not sure on the difference, again I don't know anything about plastering). He said its the best way to fix it. But I'm not sure if hes exactly trustworthy so I thought I'll ask here. Money isn't really an issue, I would rather pay for it to be done right so please let me know if this isn't the correct fix so I can have someone else come and re do it properly. I dont want mould/damp/rust to seep through if hes just plastered/skimmed over the current mould/damp/rust, etc. Hope that makes sense :)
 
Best bet would be to go live on fb when he’s back tell us all then we can tune in to see if he’s doing it ok or not

What do you expect. The website you mention is full of cowboy bottom feeding jack of all trade builders. You are right full hack off (including removing beads), prime, renovation plaster, limelite finish (this is the spec assuming masonry wall and that the leak has been resolved)

How much did you pay for the cosmetic skim?

Its tough to find tradesman without using that site. I live in a pretty rural place. No one I know was able to recommend a tradesman and googling local plastering companies etc didn't give me many results. I contacted all companies/tradesman within a 50 miles radius and wasn't able to find anyone who could do it. I'm always dubious when resorting to MyBuilder, but this particular person had hundreds of 5* reviews. It was £300
