If you say so, then of course I'll bow to your superior knowledge of the capabilities of someone you've never met doing something you've never tried.

It's not that outlandish if you actually think about it, still a daft thing to do, but perfectly possible for a strong man in his prime. I'd imagine balance would be the main difficulty. 7 cwt is 355 kgs, which is considerably less than half the weight they carry on the yoke walk in those strong man competitions. I wouldn't mind betting there are a few on this forum that could do it.

Bet your house on me

the HEAVIEST atlas ball in strongman competition is 160kg, so more than two of those.
possible but improbable.

Any decent spread on here will tell you how hard the labouring was when we first started out.

Many times I've buried my feet into 20 ton of sand mixed and carried 2 good spreads.

It builds up your body as a young man ready to start on the trowel.

Loading pallet after pallet of boards all day etc.

When you start on the trowel it's a different ball game again (y)

But at least your a bit more built for it.

Love the way machine boys screwed their heads on.

That's apples and oranges though. The atlas stones are lifted from the ground onto a platform which has no connection to walking with a heavy load across your shoulders. The yoke is loaded and carried across your shoulders, so you need to compare those weights.

This is one of the problems I have now with my back. I started working b4 my body was fully developed. I was to young starting out. The amount of sand and cement we used to go trough was mental. No dab then.

Alex Ferguson said same about Michael Owen .....would of been one of best strikers in world ...was pushed too much too young .... Full of injuries when should of been in his prime (y)

mate 355 kg on your shoulders/back is as good as impossible.

Have a google, in this age of film everything there are plenty out there showing strong but not huge blokes doing yoke walks. Here's a video of a bloke doing 400kg and he's not exactly huge.

Yoke carry.

Impressive but evenly distributed weight with the machinery.

Id be impressed as f**k seeing 375kg on site. Id say 75kg a shoulder max but they must have been monsters

I remember when I was teen carrying 2x50kg bags on my shoulder. You always start with one bag and always when you return and look at pile you got that superman mode and you crack on . The amount of gear I had to move up and down was ridiculous. Not a word of complaint or f**k**g around- it was my job! When your back starts to give up you put the gear over your shoulder and your hand on your hip, this way you can balance the weight and give your back a rest for a bit. Insane times, when I look back!

Think how bags mould round whatever they're on. A single bag on each shoulder and they wrap down front and back to the point you can walk round quite happily hands free. Stack two more a side and one on top to bind the stacks.

Like I said, fcuking stupid because one slip, trip, knee give out and you'd be lucky to get away without a broken neck or back.

Yes, they were somewhat sturdy built for loads not sprints.

As I mentioned though, it took its toll dodgy back and knees etc. died at 66. That sort of nonsense is all great when you're young and daft, but you get the bill eventually.

Were getting older mate.

I loaded out a pallet 50k bags off a scaffold thinking I was god as a teen showing off in front of the gaffa ....until one slipped and landed 4 floors down next to him ...
Could of killed someone.

Glad I'm just skimming now lol

Yes, we had our youth.... we often did 200 kg between the two shoulders, but that was just for show off and not something we did often , but we were not shy of testing our limits , something you can’t explain let alone make a labourer to do. I am happy now I got machines and gadgets to make it easier on me today. Looking at the bags today I always say f**k that getting two, let alone 4.
Anyway, I am one of the few who had the pleasure to work with @imago father and can confirm his statement is underrated!
