Quoted a job over the phone the other week....overboard and skim a ceiling, I said send me couple of photos as they're much of a muchness, got photo's and fine agreed a price, a few days later txt me and said he was stripping walls could I do them too and attached a few photos, I agreed a price and turned up today and every place he hadnt took a photo all the plaster had fallen off the walls, had to have a really awkward conversation that the photo's were taken to not show the remedial work needed and it would be more money, customer agreed but wasnt very happy (neither was I to be honest).....lesson learned always go and view! Rookie mistake

Hmmmmmm he wasn't very happy and that's before you have started, I've got a feeling you are going to learn another lesson on this job.

I must admit I do it all the time especially for these smaller jobs as is not worth it, I think I win more than I lose but it's a gutter when it happens though

wonder if the Bg certified scheme allows u to quote over the phone lol

don't price your mybuilder ones over the phone. if this was one he could have left you bad feedback for increasing the price. had you over a barrel. you should have agreed to price it over the phone with one caveat - that the work was what could be seen from the photies. when you arrived if more work was needed then the price would be more. he sounds like a t**t.

It wus a mybuilder job, think I made him understand in the end...i suppose we'll see at feedback time

I go an look at everything even patching I went back an forth to one job not long aga rendering about 4 times but I'd rather do that than show any embarrassment to myself like being unprofessional

I don't think there's anything wrong with estimating small jobs from pictures and/or measurements. I just make it very clear it is an estimate and a fixed price quotation will only be given once I have visited and checked things properly.
I can't be added with going to look at small jobs and to price it for them to say o we had a quote for X amount less.
I'll give a estimate higher than I'd quote and that gets rid of the wasters.
Then I'll go look at a job.
Or if it's email I've a basic checklist of questions I copy and paste each time and then have proof if they don't mention things like this.
Just cover yourself from all angles and you'll be fine.
