I think everyone in their lifetime should rip down at least one black lime and lathe ceiling, just to give them some perspective while they sit in their nice warm offices on their comfy chairs...

I think alot of the problem is there are alot of so called plasterers that dont take pride in their work themselves, so why should other trades show them respect?
Unfortunatly this has ment that the respect for all plasterers is slowly being lost.
Ive been plastering for nearly 12years with 7 of them working in a partnership. I worked for the first 5 years for my old boss and his dad who was in his seventees and had been plastering most of his life. I got taught the old and new ways of plastering and it has deff served me well. I do mainly domestic and small builders (refurbs, lofts, extensions) and i have charged £150 a day for the past seven years and i have always been busy and thankfully still am.
Ive had quite a few of my builders tell me they can get plasterers for £70 per day and i tell them all to use them!!! A few of them have and all ended coming straight back to me and even some got me to redo what the other spreads had done.
I was always taught to do all of my work to the highest possible standard, and make sure its always cleaner when you leave than when you get there! Always clean doorframes, sockets, windows, skirting, wash/hoover floors. The tidying up may add 1/2hour to your day but could be the difference in getting the next job. Even on sites it doesnt take 5 mins to run the scraper and brush over the floor.
I know we work in a messy trade but turning up for work with half of yestardays set on your clothes and gear doesnt give a good impression from the start. I always find that being punctual and polite is a deffinate must with all customers stands me in good stead.
Like most ive got a mortgage, wife and 4 kids to pay for and not being able to charge any more money for 7 years is making things quite tight but until people realise that quality costs then we are all screwed!!
I am not trying to tell people how they should run their business but just how i do and what works for me.

Agree with ya apart from one thing, ****** if Im changing me tracky bottoms and t shirt every day cos Im dirty from day before! Im sure customers dont mind if you turn up on day two of their job with bits of s**t stuck to ya, it is a dirty job after all! same underwear all week too.

Maybe you should keep your boots on when you go in if they are the same socks too!!!!!

Nah I have to change me socks, I splash so much water every where I get them soaked day in day out, athletes foot to the extreme.

P.s. dont wear boots, Etnies all the way, rather look cool and break a few toes than wear boots. ;)

Plastering 2 i am afraid you me and a few others on here are a dying breed ,what chance have we got against the sort of attitude in the last post and what happens when by chance you have to work with a spread with this type of values it can end up in tears .if you have no respect for yourself god knows what the work will be like, as for being covered in plaster well a stiff brush at the end of the day soon sorts that out and just because you sweat during the day does that mean you should not wash because you are going to sweat again tomorrow? . Pride is what its all about but that is something that is not taught these days its all just get it on the walls a situation that we only have ourselves to blame for because the more you do the more they want you to do and for less money . When i was learning some 25 years ago now i was told at the start that before you can learn a job you first have to learn how to work and that meant cleaning

get a grip you ******* prick, never heard of sarcasm? if you knew anything about me you'd know I run my business just like Plastering2.. ******* idiot.

fair one free rider but your sarcasm does not come over well in print so i apologise , i was not really having a go at you but it is that sort off attitude that you come across from so called plasterers that really pisses me off and gives us all a bad name. its not just about what we do but also about how we do it .

No worries dude thats cool man, you are right, people need to take pride and come across like they take pride! half the reason I bought brand new van was for this, getting it washed every month or so to keep it looking tidy too, swings jobs for sure!

Nice one its good to see there are others around who still have some pride and a professional work ethic . KEEP THE FAITH.

Only sixteen posts in and you put one of the best posts on here I've ever read.

Why don't you just change into/out of your work clothes at the beginning/end of the working day that way you always turn up clean and tidy and look right if you're going to price a job up on the way home.

Your van/car doesn't as ****** up either. Although I always prefer to price a job up in my work clothes. I suppose it's because it puts peoples mind at rest that you are a working spread and not a chancer or middle man.
