The hard rubber float is great if the render has dried right in. Much quicker than a plastic float. I would not dream of doing outside render without one in my tools. Kirk rules!!!!

I use them. They're petty common here. In CA where he is there is more variety but most big box stores carry some. I'll take some pics of the options next time I'm in there. They vary from soft to dense and bring out a good finish if you hit it at the right time.

I have always used a sponge to finish. Kirk uses all different sponge floats. I have tried different rubber or sponge floats of normal sand and cement render
