It's an absolute b*****d of a dog. Somebody dropped her off here once until she could be re-homed. That was 4 years ago now, so I'm not expecting it to happen any time soon.

It's a half collie/ half Jack Russell (I think) Clever as could be and knows what I want her to do out and about without being told. Drops beside me to cross the road, waits outside the shop without being told. I can even leave her outside the supermarket for a short time without the lead.

But it rips fcuk out of its bed - gets through about one a week and it's a grumpy bugger. Snarls at children. Even me once when I tried to cuddle it when I was pissed.

@imago, what you wanna do is get a nice looking lass to be your apprentice, coz let’s face it, any millennial you take on is gonna spend all its time on Facebook doing the best part of fuckall........so, that being the case you might as well have something nice to look at........I know sexist.......whachoogonnado...pffft
 
Just advertise @imago. Maybe on indeed. Ask for CV’s and a covering letter stating why they’re right for the job. That’ll filter out the drop outs who can’t be arsed selling themselves.
Then do a few interviews and you’ll know who’s the right one. Trial period and all that and you just never know it might work out well.
 
Still it’s tough employing nowadays. H&S, compensation culture making you almost paranoid about safety, Facebook distractions/mobile phones, pensions to pay, PAYE, ppe etc etc.

We gonna buy a westie this year I’ve always really liked them dogs as of a kid my family ain’t really animal people but I really want a dog and been researching it a lot ect as know it’s a big commitment I do love a dog that walks with it’s owner off a lead and isn’t aggressive I don’t get all that when I see the dog taking the owner for a walk

I’m domestic now after years on sites and all builders I do a bit for always have that loyal bloke with them funny thing is the man he employs never drives has about 6 kids by 3 women but they can graft and every job he is there,id love to be paid what I do for plastering to actually get involved in a bit of this and that but not to be a multi turd but just to learn more how things work ect I have a good idea of stuff but always new to learn

Agreed! I envy the builders I work for getting stuck into alsorts. Me, skim skim skim skim :sleep::sleep::sleep:

I don't think Westies really do the off the lead thing.

The Collie definitely does. I live in the centre of town and don't use the lead at all. But what it is with her is that she has got used to what I ask her to do and usually does it without being asked, or with very little encouragement. I never had one before but I'd get another no problem at all now.

Staffs are great little dogs, you know. Not too bright, but proper affectionate.

Seems to me that mongrels are the brightest - if you look at Simon's dancing dogs, it's usually a mutt of some kind. The trouble is, it's a bit hit and miss with them.

A decent builder is worth his weight in gold I last year worked for a builder and he had this old school bricklayer with him called Bern bloke was in his late 50s he was a man mountain he used to be a foreman for Roy shaw he was such a nice bloke for size of him and what a bricklayer all neat and tidy ect and knew everything about building work I picked so much up off him we got on like a house on fire (yeah I know hard to believe lol) he was gutted when I left to go elsewhere, he said he could just tell I had been taught right way and we bounced off each other no doubt many on here do when they meet, so much knowledge and skill many on here have got and with no young ones coming through it’s gonna be lost in say 10-15 years and that’s when I think prices will go up,although no doubt will still get the odd boss pleading poverty and no money on job and he priced this job in the recession so it’s at them prices :(

Loads of westie I’ve seen have been off the lead as a kid when we went Cornwall the family we stayed with had one and was so friendly westies are naturally hunting dogs and are white so back in day owners could find them in the undergrowth when they were set off into the woods
 
If it was a on the cards jobby with a van with promise of at least 5 years work I would seriously consider it

I'm no expert. Only spent any time round a couple and they were all right, but nothing special whatsoever.

Mind you, a lot is down to the owner. When Clever Dog came here, she was nothing to write home about at all. She'd been around another dog a lot, with kids, living in the country and often in the garden or kitchen. None of those things will bring out the best in a dog.

She was scared to go out at night in the winter and didn't bloody listen to me and was just generally an uninteresting little dog.

Slowly though, she's taken a comfort in knowing what she's doing and doing it well, so people stop me in the street almost every day to comment on such a well behaved dog. It took several years, mind you... don't be expecting any sense out of a dog for at least that - especially if you get a pup. It's a very slow process.

Yeah defo all takes time and I hate people who get dogs and end up giving them away as they didn’t think it through just liked idea of a dog but it’s a big commitment and that’s why I’m doing my research before I take the plunge

Meh. They're no hassle. The only time I've had bother is when there's been other people about. By that, I mean wimmins who do stupid things like hand feed the dog and then honk when it starts stealing, bollox up the routine and then wonder why the dog can't settle, shout and scream and wonder why the dog starts stressing.

Wimmins should stick to their stupid cats and defer to clever men when it comes to dogs.

The last dog was a staff x labrador and and I didn't have much choice because the soppy thing was always cuddling me.

I forgot it wasn't the staff in my drunken haze and cuddled it. Near took my head off.

And we all told lodan he was mental to get into this game fair play though he has made it work think many who do the course think it’s do the course end of it ur be on a million pound a week like they think we all earn and when they ain’t covering bills give up on it but lodan plugged away and has learnt along the way admitted his faults and hasn’t been shy of asking a question if he ain’t sure

Yes mate think it has paid off but that's why I look at imagos job because what looks not the best at the time(through distance not the job itself) can set you up for your whole life. + I love learning s**t

I have been doing a bit to help a local builder out in fact he is more of a mate and likes that I am interested in stuff and does not get pissy when I ask questions and what not.

I genuinely enjoy working and we day swap so at the moment I am working for free but in a few months I need a fair bit of work done as well so he will come along and help out as well :D

If I lived nearer to @imago I would snap his hand off to be honest or the very least offer a few days here or there :D
 
the millenials are not interested in hard graft anymore and so you will struggle to find anyone worth having
 
Push comes to shove and I'll just have to change what I do and/or how I do things. Which is doable, but I'd rather carry on as I am for now at least but needs must when the devil drives.

That's the best part of the job for me, but you have to keep in mind that you only do stuff that you can do well, and just as importantly you can do at a speed that you can earn from. So brick/block work for example, I'm happy enough to do it but stick to the fiddly stuff involving lots of cuts, toothing etc. Big areas of blockwork make more sense to contract out to a small gang. Same sort of thing for plumbing. Electrics, and structural stuff I don't really trust left to others and so on. So if I get someone for the next year for example they'd be able to work with me and the other trades.

We'll see what happens I guess, you never know what the next day will bring. (y)

That's the sort of journey time @Nisus has to get over this side of town, crazy really. I try to only take jobs this side of town and out towards Warwick/Coventry now because of the traffic. It's not so much the journey time, just that sitting in traffic is a ball ache.
