Hi, my first post so please go easy on me !
I'm renovating a 1920's semi and have just pulled down an old lath and plaster ceiling that I intend to plasterboard. In doing this I have also taken out the coving. In removing the remains of the coving at the top of the walls, the plaster has been pulled away and is now fairly loose for about 12 inches down the wall but in parts right down to where a picture rail once was. The wall is brick behind. I have been told it is a lime render.
My questions are :
1. If I can get away with patching up the top of the walls (lower area isn't too bad and can be skimmed) can I just use s&c and then skim the entire wall? Would a pre mixed product like hardwall be better? Is the use of lime necessary?

2. If I end up going back to brick for everything, can I just use hardwall and multi finish? I have been told just dot and dab but I would rather have solid walls if possible.

Thanks very much.
Tim.

Hi Tim, use s/s dont unibond the brickwork so as to get sution, u can add h/lime if u want

Well thanks for that Malc ! I have got a plasterer that is going to teach me the basics whilst doing my house but I've pestered him enough for the time being so thought I would ask on here (after all, I did post in the DIY plastering section). I guess the DIY forum would be redundant if that is always going to be the advice?

Hi tim, welcome to the forum. You could read malc's post as him telling you to get a plasterer to look at the job and give you some advice. rather than reading it for a plasterer to do the job for you. I wouldnt use lime to patch it up, just use a backing plaster or s/c if you prefer.............why dont you post some pics of the job.............:RpS_thumbup:

If U have a plasterer i take it he knows what he is doing. ask him this simple question, what materials do i use on wall?

Just wet the area where the patches are and apply sand and cement, keep it weak ,about five sand to one cement,I would add lime myself and render fibres but you do not have to.you can add plasticiser or waterproofer instead.hardwall is fine if its an internal wall, hardwall is not good if there is any water ingress, I am not a fan of dry lining myself but loads of people are.
